What was the exhaust pipe size and the header collector size?

I think side pipes are 2.5" but the comp cars are not my specialty. The headers were Belanger I'd bet!

They were Belanger, gave my original set away for replication. That friendship dissolved and thus no way to measure.

Tom, glad they are making as it keeps it legit in the replication of these parts.

Jim has the SPF factory headers to start with and depending on how they work he can duplicate them in larger diameter or go with the Wilson units.

By and large, most of the USRRC cars, the 5 FIA cars, and the earlier Sebring comp cars all had 3" main pipes, with 3.5" fake muffler cases.

I say "by and large" because there was so much variation in the sidepipe design and layout, from car to car.

Looking at vintage photos of the 289 comp cars, I see some that look like they just had 3 inch straight pipes, and then there's CSX2557, which had an early variant of the 2 into into one collectors, with dual sidepipes, that were eventually used on the Daytona Coupes

When I was re-doing my car's sidepipes, I found this diagram which helped me a lot. I can't remember where I downloaded it from, so I don't know who to give proper credit to, but it is a great sketch:

I keep thinking I should give my pipes a white coat. Would be fun for a bit. Check out the whitewalls on that jAG!

Yeah, CSX2557 had (and still has ) dual pipes on each side-

HAH ! I've looked at that picture numerous times, and never noticed the E-Type. Those tires are cool...


If you decide to go white on your pipes, and if you use the VHT paint, I will recommend that you pay careful attention to the initial curing process laid out on the can. I didn't read that part, and now I have some flaking going in up in the front section (the muffler, and the rear section are still nice and solid). I'll be sanding, and re-spraying mine real soon......:

I had one of my BDR's done in white by a ceramic coater in Jax Fl. Looked great and I never had an issue with them.

White pipes look great, but I had a nightmare experience with white VHT this past fall. Followed directions to the letter with clean proper sandblasted prep. First attempt failed when heat cycled. Second attempt failed as well. Sent back an entire case to VHT. Ended up with el cheapo Rustoleum BBQ paint (white) and worked WAY better. Still some discoloration from the heat at the collectors, but didn't flake off like the VHT did. I'll never use that VHT stuff again.

That's great info, Troy !

My muffler-less track pipes are painted with the el-cheapo white rustoleum BBQ paint too, and the only affect on them has been a slight tan discoloration, but the paint has adhered well, and isn't flaking off, either.

But when I decided to paint my muffler'd pipes white, I went with the more expensive VHT product, since these pipes are on the car way more than the others are (90%-10%)

maybe after I sand off the VHT, I'll just run to HD and pick up a couple cans of the Rustoleum again....

I believe that the above referenced drawing was one that CSX3018 (Richard Messersmith had posted some time ago. I know he and I went back and forth on the subject many times on the phone.
I have a 3" system on my FIA, less mufflers. I had copied the system on my car from some original pipes I had in my collection of parts but from stainless steel.

Would make for a genuine but almost unique setup for an FIA replica, and would be quite economical on space
