My Cobra ate two of these. I wasn't smart enough to have the first bad one rebuilt so when the second one died I had to buy another. Why do Cobras have such troubles with the MSD units? Are there more reliable equivalents?

It's not just Cobras that have trouble with MSD.

I believe the problem is with the builders installing them incorrectly. They should be powered and grounded directly from the battery. The battery acts a a filter for noise and voltage spikes. I might add that grounds are the source for the biggest electrical problems on fiberglass cars. Loose grounds, grounds to painted metal surfaces and oxidation at ground points due to moisture. Loose cheesy connectors and overloaded circuits are next.

I'm going to be doing just that over the next week or so... Thanks Blas.

I just fried my old 6a - probably going to have it repaired and kept as a spare, though.

Blas, I used to have an old MSD box that was fried, Was keeping it to rebuild at one point, but may have gotten rid of it. I will look to see if I still have it.

I've taken another look at getting my 6a repaired and probably won't be - not worth it by the time I pay repair costs + cross-border shipping both ways. There appears to be nobody in Canada that repairs these, so it gets pricey.

Where do you need the MSD box shipped to?

Default MSD Boxes

This is not to say, this is the case but be aware that several years ago MSD had a real problem with COUNTERFEIT boxes. These were even sold through well know performance parts supplies. From the outside, you could not tell that is was counterfeit, MSD learned of the problem when these boxes started to show up for repair and were opened up and were found to be counterfeits. Several car magazines did articles on this. Yes, they were made in the country you are thinking of. I am not saying MSD doesn't have some problems but some of what you hear is also coming from the conterfeits.

Thanks Brian, picked one up yesterday at a estate sale. Guy had tons of car stuff all over his front yard. Street in front of his house looked like a car show which is why I stopped. But thanks again for the offer.

When my 6AL died I switched to the MSD Street fire 5520 since it had the same functions but runs $100 less. https://www.msdperformance.com/produ...eet/parts/5520
Once it dies I'll switch the whole system to Pertronix flamethrower

My 6AL was giving me problems a few years back - mainly if you tried to start
the car after driving it would heat soak and do nothing until it cooled down. I sent it in and got it repaired for $36. and haven't had a problem since. Knock on wood!

Where did you have the box mounted?

Inside the cockpit on passenger side. Some resistors/capacitors? were replaced.
This was about 3 years ago and have had no problems since, so I think the
location wasn't really the problem.

Sounds like a voltage spike took it out...

I've got a Summit ignition box ( https://www.summitracing.com/int/par...illocation=int ) on the way. They're supposedly made by MSD and certainly less $$ - $148 for a digital box with rev limits. I think the closest MSD box is a 6AL for $100 more, though the 6AL appears to be a bit more efficient, with slightly higher output and slightly lower power consumption. My engine is a relatively mild build, so the lower output of the Summit box is pretty much irrelevant, IMO.

The box is not going to be mounted in the engine compartment like the old MSD box was, this one is going behind the dash to keep it a bit cooler.
