Default Did shelby ever make fiberglass bodys?

Hi , new to the site and looking to purchase a cobra. Saw a add on craigslist for a 1966 cobra that was built in 2008 by a engineer in Phoenix AZ. The chassis was made by the engineer, and the body, as I was told was made by Shelby 40yrs ago, and purchased by the engineer/ builder. Does this sound right on the body? As mentioned, the add is on the Chicago craigslist, in Roselle, Ill. if anyone can help with any info. Thanks, Mike.

40 yr ago was 1977. The original cars (aluminum body) stopped production in the late 60's. Shelby did not get interested in cashing in on the Replica car market until much later. I doubt seriously that Shelby had anything to do with whatever this guy is talking about.

Bottom line is that if it was built in 2008 it has nothing to do with an original Cobra or Shelby for that matter. Now Shelby did get into making replica's of the originals in that time period, but he sold turnkey minus cars for 6 figure prices.

I think the seller is misinformed at best, if he is claiming what you wrote. He may have an excellent replica of some type that may be worth looking at. However if he is telling tall tails, I would be very cautious.

Yes, that is the car. My mistake, he said that the body was sitting for 50 years before builder in AZ bought it.

Not a bad looker though ! Never seen "frenched" tail lites on a cobra before.! Can we identify it ? No back brace for roll bar, dual tube door hinges with leather stop straps, those triangular gussets in the aft eng comp corners, all look familar. CR? CMC?

I noticed the same things. The original builder/engineer built the chassis. They used an original mustang II front cross member. Wish I new more about this car.

My personal opinion (as are all my posts on Club Cobra ), is to walk away from this one as the potential money pit it could turn out to be due to the unknowns.

Bill,
You could say "professional" opinion too.

What Bill said! Without backing by a reputable manufacturer, that car could be a whole host of issues with no parts supply or backup.

Nope, never been a professional, but I have been obsessed with these cars and others, also been around the block and involved in the hobby longer than most....

I'll leave it at that for now
