Just got back from Winchester Speedway. We had a ball looking at old sprints and midgets and running on the track. I stayed low to stay out of trouble and let the guys who are completely familiar with their Cobras take the fast lane. I did discover though that it will accelerate fiercely in fourth gear from about 50 to 80+ on the straights...especially when you kick in the secondary venturis on the carb.
The Cobra hugged the road and felt very very stable on the track. Also nothing fell off or needed even an adjustment excpeting the inside rear view mirror which needed its fasteners tightened.
Lots of old iron including ford v8 60 powered midgets and offie powered midgets and sprints. There was a nice selection of chevy powered early Indy upright style cars too.

Nice to see that you had some fun. It is amazing how quickly a cobra will accelerate in any gear. That horsepower to weight ratio really does have a positive effect. Good idea to slowly learn what the cobra will do on the track. Be cautious, you put a lot of time getting the car to do what you want it to do, no use putting it into a wall.

Thanks Michael for organizing it. Also many thanks to the oldtimers as we were their guests at the speedway.

It was about 95 degrees and quite humid. I went through three shirts in all. Drank lots of water and used an umbrella for shade while sitting. The car never missed a beat and held steady at 190 degrees.
We talked to a small man about his 1948 offie midget. He is 85 years old and still racing! He found the midget in a garage where it had been sitting since 1955. He remembered seeing it as a young man and went to the house fifty years later and asked about it. It was still sitting there. He was able to buy it. He then restored it himself. It is a lovely car.

Today I added stick on padding to the kirkey racing seats. Tomorrow i'm driving over to a nearby town for a picnic with a bunch of old friends. We eat steak and drink some, I'll not be drinking anything except maybe one light beer.

Filled up before heading out. 86 miles, 9 gal....about 9 mpg?
Made the trip in fine fettle, nothing fell off or broke, and did not scare myself too much.

So I searched alignment specs and found this:
Start with 4deg caster; front camber 3/8 deg street to about a 1.0 deg for performance. 1/16 to 1/32 front toe-in.
rear : .5 to .75 deg camber and 1/16 toe-in.
I'd like a bit more caster since I have power steering. Sound ok?

I run 4 degrees caster, 1/2 of a degree of negative camber, and 3/16 toe-in (or .45 degrees) I've heard of some guys running as much as 5 or 6 degrees caster.

Thanks Harry!
I need to have the car go straight down the road a lot better so the caster I think will help that.
|
I am doing 6 degrees of caster, -1 degree camber in the front and -.5 degrees in the rear.

Today I was driving very slowly around town and my left side side pipe fell down in front. The rear is still attached. I found the two clips that hold the side pipe cluster to the inside headers were out of commission....one broken and the other missing its little bolt. Probably the missing one went first causeing the second to fail....so I'll have to get someone to weld that tab back on.
Note to self: I just weighed my wheels and tires....60 rear, 52 front. I'll check weight of tires to get weight of wheels. 3 5/8" between caliper mount bolts.

I got the exhaust pipe off the side! I'm taking it to get the tab welded back on. I discovered there are three connections with two tabs each. Better than I thought!

I got that tab welded back on. Tomorrow I'll have to paint the repair area and the entire side pipe I suppose.
Not bad!

I had a bit of a struggle getting the pipes back together in the four pipe joint inside the front fender. I was considering surrender and taking it to my mechanic but decided to adjust the supports of the side pipe a bit and suddenly the pipes sort of jumped at each other and connected!;) I just tapped them in. I had to bend the rewelded tab a bit to pass the other one and the third one I had to drill a bit to get the bolt in.
Wooo Hoooo!

Nothing much done this week or last. I had cataract surgery last wed. and will do the other eye today. Lots of thinking.
In my receipts from the PO there is a receipt for raising the car 1" on its suspension "to improve streetability" or some such. The truth, I believe, is that it was raised to keep it off the tires because they stick out too far. So I am looking for wheels with more backspacing so I can lower the car and the tires will tuck up inside the fender like they should.
The problem is finding wheels that fit 5 on 5" bolt patterns that will carry the tires and not be too heavy. I found some lovely wheels but they are for 5 on 4.75" bolt patterns.
I may have the studs relocated in the hub to fit the 5 on 4.75" pattern that is common with Corvettes of certain years and look to have backsets which will be an improvment to what I have.
I also noted that the lower a arms on front are not parallel to the ground. I believe I'll have to relocate the front down so they will be parallel.
The rear I am trying to figure out but I think lowering it will settle the car too.
