NPT=national pipe taper.....TAPER,..... they are tapered to make the seal. the correct depth is determined by a thread gauge, by tapping them deeper you may very well have made the threads unusable, unfortunately you won't know until you put pressure to it

I understand the taper thread principle. However the coupling would not enter the unit at all. They were undertapped. Retapping them deeper is all that was required and I did it in stages. Don’t worry the coupling is still 1/4 off bottoming out, when fully tightened.
