Default Bucket List RUNS

I would like any recommendations for day trips . We will be traveling from Phoenix,AZ , Dallas and then to the East coast . Up to New Hampshire then to Columbus,Ohio for the Cobra bash on June 21. Wrigley Field, Minn and then Yellowstone, Tahoe and home. The only firm date is the Cobra get together. The Cobra will be in a trailer for starters. I can't remember all the runs people have talked about. Tail of the Dragon ? Probably 3 months of waring 0ut 0ur welcome at friends and relatives . Thanks, Gary and Vikki

Near east Yellowstone is Chief Joseph Pass. That's a spectacular drive.

Thanks. Exactly what I am looking for to create a plan. Which will change a few times I am sure.

If you come across 40 you should stop in Tucumcari for lunch. They have a great preserved stretch of route 66. The Motel Safari in town is a good spot to stay over.

If you come across 10 you should detour through Big Bend. You could spend a week there and only scratch the surface. FM 170, "River Road", might be the best drive I have ever done in the Cobra. It is right up there with Tail of the Dragon, Needles Highway, PCH and Million Dollar Highway.

Big Bend National Park, Texas.

Million Dollar is US550 between Silverton and Ouray. It is a MARVELOUS drive, but temps can be cold even in summer.

I have driven all over North America. From southern California to Maine, and the Mexican border to the Arctic Ocean. The only place I have not driven is the Florida Keys.

The Million Dollar Highway is by far one of my favorite roads. Miles and miles of twists and turns.Spectacular vistas as far as the eye can see. It's like driving the Alps. If you have never driven this road, you have never driven the best of North America. Nothing in Alberta, British Columbia, The Yukon, or Alaska can compare.

My favorite drive is south through Lake City and Creed. West over Wolf Creek Pass and through Pagosa Springs and Durango. Then north on 550 to Ourey and Ridgeway. I try and do this every 1-2 years. From Colorado Springs, it's an easy 3 day trip. And a slightly rushed 2 day trip.

While you are in Ohio for the Cobra gathering-take a short trip to Wright Patterson Air Force base for the Air Force Musem-free parking and entry--many great displays up to and including space stuff--------Don't even imagine seeing it all in one day but do as we do and stop by there for a few hours every time we are in the area-------

lots of room for parking tow vehicle and trailer--------

+1 for Million Dollar Highway. If carbed then consider packing smaller jets as the car will run pig rich at 9,000-10,000ft.

I agree about this trip. Especially Wolf Creek Pass and the rest of the southern Colorado route to Durango. Don't forget Mesa Verde. And you're real close to the museum in Gateway and the hotel is world class and would be a good stopover on a long drive.

This is coming down into the valley just before (or after, depending on which way you're going) from Wolf Creek.

Big Bend is in far west Texas, East of El Paso and South of I-10.

Map of River Road

There isn't much for Cobras in the State Park, River Road is the only paved road in the State Park, but the National Park is great. Terlingua, Alpine and Marfa are cool towns to check out also.

May can be a bit tricky. You could hit snow then. July and August are a better bet. September is often dry, but it starts getting cold in the high country. The passes are well over 10,000 feet.

We will wait until the end of trip for the Durango area. Been snowed on in first part of Sept in Lake Tahoe. Anyone in Georgia , the Carolina's, Virginia's, Tenn, Kentucky areas for runs. Bringing golf clubs for Myrtle Beach area.

Gary,

For the NH portion, I recommend Route 1A. It was my wifes favorite drive in the Cobra. The 25-mile or so NH coastline starts in Seabrook at Route 286 (great seafood on either side of the road (Markeys on 1 side and & Browns on the other) and winds its way through Hampton Beach, North Hampton, Rye and then into Maine.

Further north, I recommend the Kancamagus, it's a scenic byway in the White Mountains of NH.

The NE Cobra guys have a large contingent of FFR's and meet pretty regularly for BFast & cruises. You may want to reach out and see if they have any plans you can join in on when you're there.

HTH,
Will

Highway 1 on the CA coast is highly coveted among car and motorcycle riders. Starting at San Francisco and down through Monterey, Santa Cruz, Cambria to Pismo Beach is a fun 6-hour jaunt. Add in photo opportunity stops and it could be a full day. FYI: Pavement condition leaves something to be desired at times.
