I would agree with the above posts. Check the battery first, the fuel pump is probably in the rear on the passenger side and that is what you are hearing. a trickle charger over night will probably not fully charge a dead battery. More than likely the battery was starting to go and the previous owner did not want to replace it. Good luck.
