Another stupid question: my aluminum intake manifold bolts into the iron block rather than the aluminum heads, right?

Dumb ass me. Looking closer at my engine, I should have realized the manifold bolts go into the heads.

I would say It has been my experience, if it was some time before you caught this Stop Fooling Around! Remove and install new good quality gaskets and be done with it.Trust me you will suffer much less and be much happier you did it right.

I've come to the conclusion, I've let my OCD get to me and don't believe I really have a leak. My coolant surge tank has a hose that runs to an overflow tank that has a traditional radiator cap that fits loosely because there is no gasket underneath. When installing it years ago, I was advised to remove the gasket to let it breath. Whether that was good advice or not, I'm thinking the coolant smell is coming from the loose fitting cap.

I smell coolant all the time when I'm driving in traffic -- regardless of what car I'm in. IMO, on a Cobra it's not really a leak until it forms a visible puddle on the garage floor, regardless of what it is. And I don't even have a cap on my overflow bottle -- it's mostly just to keep small coolant drips off the floor so Ellie can't lick them. Here's a pic:

I can commiserate with the OP.
I find that after driving for extended periods of time and experiencing several thunder-clap quality farts while in the driver's seat, when I park the car with the sun shining on the seat, there is a vile aroma about the vehicle on my return.

Well, I guess as long as there is no leakage residue underneath the car or on the driver's seat, all is OK.

Fix the cap!!! See if this solves your problem. I had a Vette that after you came in from using it, had the smell of anti-freeze but never any drips or water spots anywhere. All the clamps were tight. Well it was a pin hole in the top radiator hose that only released fluid when hot and under pressure. How it was found was, I went to check the oil and opened the hood in 30 degree weather and saw the steam coming from the pin hole, if it weren't that cold I would of never found this problem. Start with the cap!!!

Most antifreeze has added fluorescein to detect leaks with a black light. Check your oil and exhaust pipes.
