Coolant smell
Often after driving my Cobra, I smell coolant, but never see leak signs nor drips on the ground underneath. All hose fittings are tight and appear dry. I have an overflow tank with an outlet hose, but never see any dripping or signs of coolant discharge. The last few oil analyses have indicated a slight amount of coolant in the oil. Recently checked coolant level and it was down about a quart since changed about a year and half and 500-600 miles ago. Engine is a 351W. Where should I be looking to figure this out?

intake
Hi,
Check the intake manifold bolts, they loosen up and should be re torqued, if left too long the gasket may need to be changed.

Thanks for that suggestion. Any idea of torque specs for manifold bolts?

Just checked manifold bolts. 10 of 12 accessible without removing fuel rail. All 10 turned a good half a turn or so with torque wrench set at 22lbs. Hope that will make a difference.

And before you start yanking the intake and heads off, give the old cooling system tablets a try. They really do work... sometimes. But they're a lot easier than yanking the heads off.

Also could be a leaking head gasket.

Never use a band-aid fix, always fix it right, unless you are just trying to make it home ,so you can fix it right. You could cause more problems, by adding things in your coolant that don"t belong in it.

I'm hoping tightening the intake manifold bolts will do the job. I guess I'll know after next drive.

Hope to hear if intake bolts fixed your issue. Seems you would have had a sweet smell in the exhaust or making oil if that was the case..

The final 180 degrees of rotation up to torque spec makes a HUGE difference.
Those bolts were likely only at 50% of clamping force specification. You may
want to rethink doing the last (2) bolts as well if those (10) were that loose.

Good thought. I'll look at it closer to see what all is involved in removing fuel rail.

On a lot of intakes, you have to use a crow foot to get to a couple of them. Before taking apart the rail, see if you think that would do it first.

I'm afraid removing the fuel rail will be more complicated than I want to get into, but will look at it. Pardon my ignorance, but what is a crow foot?

It lets you put your ratchet down on it with the head of the wrench off to the side. (that's really a terrible explanation). Here's a pic:

Thanks. I've seen those before, but didn't know what they was called. Crow Foot sounds about right!

That is for iron heads. If you have aluminum heads, the max is 18 ft-lbs

And for an alternative opinion... I have an aluminum Blue Thunder intake and my engine builder specifically had me retorque the bolts at 500 miles to 32 ft./lbs. and then never touch them again. And I did, and I used a crow foot, and I recalculated the torque based on the crow foot's impact.
