People are lazy. When they ask a Cobra owner if it is "REAL" or "ORIGINAL", they mean to ask..."Was it made by Shelby Enterprises back in the mid '60s?". If a person's Cobra was not made in the mid '60s, by the above-mentioned company, to answer these people's question with an answer other than "NO", is in fact lying. Oh man- sometimes I wish I had ALL my $35K cash back...but then I look at those who have the "bug" much worse than I.

Until I earn $200,000+ /yr like Evan, I know there was NO WAY I was going to part with $50K+ for a weekend ride. Sorry, got better things to do with that amount of potatoes.

-I know I wish I had in my pocket 1/3 of what he just laid out for a car for a weekend ride.

-I know with that money I could buy a twenty minute ride every weekend in his or someone's REAL (COBRA) and STILL go home with a briefcase FULL of twentys.

-I KNOW THAT BRIEFCASE of twenty's would make me happier than a ride in any ORIGINAL Cobra.

-I know we are all in the same upside$down condition about our love for these damn$cars.

In the beginning--Cobra beginning, that is--Shel stuffed an American V8 with transmission into a little 'ole English car and attached it to a Jag center section with rear suspension intact. The second iteration was basically the same car with an improved front suspension widened and buldged here and there so it would accept an even bigger engine.

Carrying this further into our present discussion, if a replica, knockoff, repro or whatever you want to call it is made to SIMULATE the "original" or "real" Cobra, then using my logical, but devious mind, why can't the real thing be referred to as a "cobble job", modified AC or what we commonly refer to as a HOTROD!

Now look at it this way: If we take that same American engine and trans and hook it up to a Jag rear end, which is what the "real" Cobra is in the first place, and surround it with a frame to hold all this stuff together and cover it with a plastic with pretty much the same shape or sometimes aluminium as the English call it, isn't it as much of a Cobra and the "real" thing? More practical, I might add.

So what if a person took an American engine and put it in an AC of today? Should they get credit for creating a whole new car? Or simply would it be no different than what people do all the time with cars by putting new engines in them? Continuation? Instead of buying a CSX4000, wouldn’t it be more proper just to buy directly from AC? If the continuation Cobras were true continuations, then wouldn’t the bodies be from AC of today?

Sad reality is that the CSX4000 owners bought into a glorified replica, which the bodies are made by a replica company. I could buy more into the whole continuation scam if Shelby American was having AC still shipping cars today. Shelby did not “invent” the Cobra, rather applied a great concept and altering the AC body some and plopping in an American big block. The only car he may have truly invented was the Series 1, which is a damn nice car but over priced by $100,000. Sometimes a person can think too highly of themselves, thereby isolating themselves from the rest of the world. Case in point the Series 1, could be one fine competitive car against the Viper and Vette but is isolated because of the inflated price. It might be more of the new owners of Shelby American than Shelby himself but neither here nor there, the Series 1 will go down as an over inflated untested car. Shelby should sit back and just be grateful to the replica industry for help boosting the interest in a car that was on a road to being forgotten or less appreciated.

Yes I drive a replica and quite proud of it. I have no point in pointing it out to people that talk to me about it. In fact the common response I get is, “who cares!”

There is reality and then there is what we wish to perceive. The reality of the replicas of today is that they are more “real” and better performing than the coined name on an AC being “Cobra”. The misguided perception is that the continuation cars are just that an actual continuation of the car of the 60’s. Show me where the chassis and body came from AC before arriving to Shelby American on the CSX4000’s. If you can then I can accept that they are a continuation, rather than a glorified replica or “Tupperware car”.

Actually I will be building my first Factory 5. My Spec Racer arrives in about a week. If money were no object I would buy a genuine Cobra from the 60’s.

I do get it as far as the CSX4000’s go. Because Shelby has endorsed the remake with a body made by a replica company, it will hold its value or possibly even go up in value in the years to come. While I could care less what the next guy has, I do find humor in the whole “continuation” theme being that the bodies are made by a replica company. After all Shelby does despise the replica industry and wants every replica owner to pay him a %. So it depends on how much one wishes to pay for an endorsement, rather than a genuine continuation.

We all love these cars and some can afford the higher dollar and some cannot. We all enjoy these cars in our own ways. Short of owning a “real” one from the 60’s, my preference would be to have a Factory 5 for a track car and a CSX4000’s or Kirkham for a streetcar. An insurance company will not cover the car if wrecked on a track but will cover the car if wrecked on a public road. Performance is the same on the track, so it depends on how much you want to throw to the wind when you hit the wall? Short of being able to afford a CSX and Kirkham, I would simply have a Factory 5. I am small fish right now so I have a small appetite and budget for these cars that I love.

p.s. I do not feel my Factory 5 is better. It is what it is and that is a Factory 5. It is not a Cobra. Resembles one but is not one. One cannot argue that the CSX4000’s are real Shelby’s.

Now we can live in peace and hold hands.

So the "official" name of the CSX 4000 series cars is "Continuation". NOT real, NOT original. Those are the facts. Yeah, I can live with that. After all, I would never mislead anyone about the circumstances of my HOT ROD. These facts should put this issue to rest for good.

Now if I ever build a car (buy a body here, a motor there) put the package together in a way thats never been done before, and call it an "Bag-o-bolts", THATS what it will be! An original "Bag-o-bolts" car. Heck, maybe I'll sell a few,,,,,,wait a few years and build some more!

Hmmmm,,,,,I'm thinking next time around I'll use the same kind body, from a different supplier this time, and maybe I'll jazz up the old style motor with some NOS or even new parts. I think I'll call it a "Bag-o-bolts" also. It will be IDENTICAL to the first edition in that all the parts will interchange.

But mostly it will be MY creation! MY "Bag-o-bolts" and you can buy one, the early one or the late one, same same, by the SAME great author of the original, ME! Only I can build the REAL ones, everybody else, however hard they try, will still have a "clone" of what I originally built!

Of course I'll sue anybody that copies it,,,but thats another story, lol.

Jason: Shelby didn't endorse the Shelby. Its a Shelby. There is a difference. Whether Shelby dispises the replica industry or they and you dispise him is irrelevant to the issue.

Also we can live in peace if you don't recognize the CSX as a REAL Cobra. Its just a car and a hobby. Besides factually and legally I'm right anyway.
