TerrySPF: I played defense in H.S. and College ball (outside LB). Didn't get that many chances to score touchdowns. Did get my bell rung more times than I can count. In fact, if your into H.S. football, if you saw the movie "Remember the Titans" the storey of T.C. Williams, we played T.C. Williams and I can tell you those guys could put a world of hurt on your ass.
My intent is not to rub anything in anyones face. 100% of my comments are made in response to demeaning comments. Maybe it comes off wrong but all I do is to state facts in response to some/many knocks and demeaning comments.
I don't know how else to do respond. Calling guys "a holes" doesn't mean anything nor is it productiive to respond to the knocks. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe I should just stay silent? Maybe I should just agree with the demeaning and incorrect statements? Nah. Not me.
And no. I wasn't referring to you as the new guy. You were mild in the insult department. Thats an average day here for me.
Don't mean to offend anyone. Don't mean to knock anyones car in my responses. Not trying to. In fact I can't understand why stating facts about the CSX is a considered a knock towards others? Beats me. But it kind of puts me in a lose lose situtaion. If I stay silent regarding the demeaning statements its not fair to me and I allow incorrect statements (sometimes motivated by envy or just meaness to go unchallenged) and if I respond with the facts I am slammed and accused of saying "mine is better" which I am not saying at all.
Think about it. If I thought I was above replicas (of which my car fits the definition) why would I even participate here and have bothered to make some friends here (I think I have 2 or 3 ) Why would I bother to drive 10 hours to go to the Fling and meet alot of these guys? No. I would just hang out at SAAC events and with guys who have CSXs.
No. I am just defending the CSX in response to bull$hit whatever the motive.
Finally, no need to apologize. Your not the first to take a shot at me. You won't be the last. No problem. Forgiven.
About that beer. Are you buying?

Now come on back and fight you sissies!
BTW, I've said it before and I'll say it again, "Evan takes atleast as much as he gives". Not many people could hang with that much ball bustin'.

Evan,
Let's see if I can hijack this thread into a completely different area.
I see you played TC - what high school did you go to and when did you graduate? I am also a former NoVa resident . I went to Lake Braddock and graduated in 1980.
I only played football (tight end) as a Freshman in high school and one of the major reasons for this was the fact that the defensive end whom I went against at Hammond (the TC Williams feeder school) was at least twice my size and hurt me more than I care to recall. Of course, I then switched to track and had a lot more success.
Regards,
Keith

Keith: Langley. Class of 1977.
Played TC Williams. Marshall, Grover, Chantilly, McLean, Herndon Yorktown, etc...
The conference is now different. Langley no longer plays the same schools as they did back in "my day". I learned this this past summer when I went back for my 25 year reunion. I also don't know when it changed.
TC was an intimadating team. Marshall was even more intimadating. They were State champs. Very tough teams.

Evan: See, we DO have more in common than these cars! I played a little LB in HS also, along with TB (went bothways for 3 yrs until Sr. Year I only played Tailback. Actually, the LB I played we called "rover". It was more LB / FS.......I went where I thought the ball was going to go.
I'm a little younger than you, but I do remember the Titans. I went to school in Ohio (state champs 3 yrs) and other teams would ask if we would scrimmage them in pre-season. Traveled a lot (for HS) and played out of state quite often, but never played TC. My HS head coach left my Sr. year to coach Notra Dame and I ended up playing 1/2 the season in Cincinnati and the other 1/2 in Toledo because my father was transferred there. Earned a scholarship to OSU and played 2 years in "back-up" roles, and on special teams. Tried to convert me to a reciever but didn't get a lot of playing time (we had an All-american that was a ball hog!). Always had an upperclassmen bigger / better in my way! To make me feel better, I always tell people that at least the guys that beat me out had great careers in the NFL! My Jr. year was supposed to be my "coming out" year according to Coach, and in pre-season practice, a "kid" (I only call him kid because he was younger than me!) shattered my shin bone (leg whip while my foot was planted) while I was screwing aroung running back punts, and I never fully recovered. Took 6 years before I could run / jump "normally", and by then, it was too late. The "kid" was our 3-time all american MLB (who owns a Cobra by the way!) and went on to play in the NFL. I still roamed the sidelines my Jr and Sr years but never dressed in pads - just cheerleaded. All in all, I had a lot of fun and got to become friends with a number of great guys. Went to 4 different Bowls while I was there and went to a lot of post-game parties (only good thing about not playing was I could PARTY!). Sure, I wish things could have been "different", but it was a great experience and I have a lot of memories and a good friends to go with them. The good 'ol days!!!
About that beer.....sure, I'll buy the first round!
......and, who's Southernfried callin' sissies????? Maybe HE should buy the first round!

Terry: Yeah. H.S. football brings back some great and some embarrasing memories for me that make me laugh today. I remember TC. They were one of the tougher teams on the schedule. I actually remember all the teams. I even remember the colors of their uniforms and helmet designs. Chantilly alway had this smell. Like linament oil. We used to tell them they smelled real purty. It used to piss em off. Funny what you remember.
Sounds like we played the exact same position. We called it "wildman" but it was basically a LB position. Back in those days my role model was good ol' Billy Bates and Cliff Harris of the Cowboys. I used to try and hit like them except after the games my ears would ring for days. After one hit I was so diorentated I began walking to the wrong side line.
Back in those days I was around 185lbs and could run like the wind (now I only pass wind). Did 4.6 in the 40 with half pads. Could run down any half back in the conference, even our half back who played for Army after H.S.
Fortuately I was never really hurt badly. Had the wind knocked out of me multiple times. Did get a fairly serious injury playing in college (FDU Division III) when they decided my speed was better used at half back. Hated offense. I didn't like the idea of carrying three balls and having 11 guys running after your ass. Had my right shoulder separated and tore a rotator cuff in a game at the end of the season sohpmore year. End of football for me.
Sounds like you could definitely play some ball. OSU scholarship. That is impressive.

Did we hijack this thread or what?!
Evan "wild man" Real1 - huh? seems to flow nice! It was called "rover" when I started playing it, and we also started calling it "monster back". Great position though! For some reason, I just liked running with the ball a little more than hitting people (but it was close!). I think it was more because of the so called "glory" you got playing offense. The next day, people seemed to remember the TD's more than any hits you made during the game. If I had to do it all over though...........?
I remember Cliff Harris! That boy would hit you! My "guys" were Jack Lambert and Walter Payton. Wore 34 in HS no matter what sport / season it was (except my fresh year I wore 6 in basketball....for Dr J !).
I was considered a "rare breed"........I was white / and quick! I ran a 4.3 in pads and that enabled me to run away from most tackles in HS. College though, they know how to play as a "team" on defense and it was hard to break away for big gains. My freshman year Coach Bruce decided to get away from a "finesse" type team and go to a powerhouse backfield with guys that could run over people. Wish he would have told me that before I signed on! I was 6'0 195. We had a guy named Keith Byars that would flat out run you over if you were in his way! He was 6'1 235. 'Nuff said! They tried to get me to play reciever but we had a pretty good one already that got mad if you didn't throw the ball to him (Chris Carter). Hey, he could play, so I didn't argue. I started to "beef up" because I wanted to play TB when Byars left (he was older) and got up to 210. Coach got mad because he wanted to start playing me at DB! Plus the extra weight wasn't good for me during Track season. I was "quick" but wasn't considered "fast" by track standards (9.7 100). I ran the 60 in college (didn't have that in HS) and finished a whisker behind Willie Gault (Chicago Bears) in an '83 indoor meet. He was older (I think he was a Sr) and we talked the rest of the meet. He watched me compete in the long jump and we were supposed to run against eachother in the 440 relay but he pulled a hamstring in his hurdles race and had to scratch in the relay. That boy could FLY! He called me "white lightning" which I took as a compliment coming from him! He would have smoked me in the 100 though, he had that "extra gear" that real "track guys" have. I'd keep up with most for 60 - 70 yards, but after that the real sprinters in college would pull away.
A lot of memories and I got to play ball with a ton of great guys (HS and College). Never got to play DB though because of my shin. Still have the x-rays from the hospital!
Now I play in a flag football league on Saturdays! Yipeee! Actually, it's pretty competitive; we have some former N. Western and Illinois grads that play along with a lot of MAC school grads. It's fun but I'm getting to be one of the oldest guys out there and the wife is telling me to "give it up old man!". I'll stick with softball and the church Basketball league next year. Sucks getting old!
Hope to meet up with you at DVSFIII ! Have a few beers and talk trash about the good old days!

I didn't think there were too many mortals that were faster than me but you would have edged me out. I ran the 100 in just 9.8 to 9.9. My 50 was 5.7 to 5.8 depending on the day.
I'm only 5'8". They said I was too short for safety/DB. But I was fast and liked hitting guys. I was probably one of the few that liked the hustle drills in practice.
Alot of teams ran the "Y" wishbone offensive back set up in H.S. equipped with fullbacks that were a load. It was usually a REAL treat when the offensive guard would trap over on the center. My job was to be the human "cork". Made my share of tackles getting run over and just hold'n on. I wasn't the biggest guy on the field so my strategy was to make sure they thought I was crazier then they were. There is something about someone who is nuts that makes them intimadating. An unecessary roughness or unsportsmen like every game was needed to make the point.
Our coach, used to play for the Oilers. He was at least 6'6' and 270lbs. I'll just say finesse wasn't his thing.
My most embarassing moment was during a Homecoming game of all games. Got pasted on the kickoff team trying to make a tackle. Was on my back trying to breath for what seemed like hours. Looked up and saw three opposing players looking down at me with a satisfied grin on their face. Wanted to say "F you" but I could not even breath. Then saw the ref. Then saw my MOTHER! I prayed for death right there! I knew that would be a real hit in school for weeks.
Many times wish I could go back in time and play again.
BTW: Used to play flag football too after my college "career". Ruptured one achilles tendon. Rehabed. Went back and played again and ruptured the other achilles tendon. Gave up. Ran out of achilles tendons.
