Driving at 100 mph +

Cobra 428..........Man do I hear ya.......it is amazing how different two cars can be.

I have an old 87 944 Turbo, chipped. That little 150 CI will wind to about 6800 RPM and about the time you hit 100 the car sits down and starts to breathe..... you know it wants to see the other end of the 165 Speedometer, and mine has been there at least a time or two.........

I have had a 514 on the road for about a year. I am still amazed at the difference. They are both loads of fun, but at 100 - 120 MPH under throttle in 3rd or 4th, you feel like the world is about to end in the cobra......it is louder than hell itself, it snarls....sounds like it wants to bite somebody and I am never sure if the front wheels are really on the ground cause the big cat is pretty well up on its haunches with 650 lbs of torque helping plant the rear wheels to the ground.........I must say traction is great for a little buggy with that kind of horsepower..........but I do wish 150 or better fealt as safe in the cobra.........have alot of work to do before i ever try to see that speed.........

The Contemporary seems to like going 135+ (of course, race track only, Mr. Insurance Man, sir) better than 45. The car tracks nicely, and the sounds are incredible. As others have noted, however, it's flat amazing how easy modern technology has made it to go fast. I carry about 15+ mph more into turn one at Thunderhill in the Z06. But nothing hits you in the viscera like a Cobra, and that's what makes it what it is--wild, hairy, roaring, stomping, sideways fun. My Contemporary is sort of like a Harley, and the Z06 is more like a sport bike. Z06s and sport bikes come and go, but Cobras and Harleys are forever.

Crazy as hell, but I once got my Contemporary up to 180 on the reverse speedo. Up to about 160-165, the car felt rock solid. Mind you I didn't just stick my leg in it, I worked my way up to speed. The road was smooth and flat and wide and no traffic.

Above 165, the road seemed to get rougher and I was getting pretty nervous, but I stepped down and got to see the speedo hit 180.

Noise? What noise? At that speed, noise was absolutely the very last thing on my mind. I had my hands full of snarling Cobra! When the individual bars of the center stripe become one and telephone poles look like a picket fence going by......that's speed!!

Scared? Yup. Never did it again. Not enough cojones! Many many times over 100 though. Hell I could hit 100 at the top of second gear!

Put the rear out in the corners on PIR and it always came back thanks to the tried and true Bluestreaks. Got up to about 135-140 on the short straight coming out of the old turn 9 in front of the grandstands. Could have gone faster, but turns 1,2 and 3 are a chicane and I didn't have enough brakes for more entry speed. Now that was a rush! Funny thing is, doing that on a track didn't scare me at all and the car loved it! Open highway? Never again. I don't care where it is.

I REMMEMBER YOU PASSING ME AT THUNDERHILL ABOVE 140! I FELT THAT AT ABOUT 135- 140 THE FROUNT WAS LIFTING SOME AT THUNDERHILL. FORTUNATLY IT WAS TIME TO BREAK GOING INTO TURN ONE. SEE YOU AT WINE COUNTRY (SEARS) AT THE END OF MAY?

Well, I thought it would be proper to wait until Ron (owner #2) chimed in on this thread...and a little private bet with myself was thus proven correct (I hope Jerry G. doesn't read this, Ron! ). I indeed UNDERceeded your velocity---by a decent bit. You probably know the stretch I picked--it was about 20 miles north of Santa B. I did a quick oil change at my freind Mike Jungermann's house, and got her on a lonely stretch heading north (day 2 of ownership)---I was rocked by the (any gear) acceleration! Christ, above 3200 it was bu-bye! Got up to 134----then had a paranoid poultry episode. I was TOTALLT belted in, but no helmet. Didn't wanta call Ron asking if he wanted to attend the car's funeral, either. My Gawd! I will honestly say---I may not need to go that fast again for a while! Maybe after a few lessons from a Pat B. type....

Went for a nice ride with Gary Patterson in the FIA, track ready !! Well... His side of the car (left) had a little bitty wind screen, My side...... NOTHING ..........

Well, let me tell ya, everything was OK up to 100 mph
At 120, the wrinkles on my face were slapping my ears !
At 130, my eye lids would not open, even tho I wear glasses,
I guess it was natures way of keeping the eyeball in the socket!
At 140, the wrinkles at each side of my face were slapping each other silly at the back of my head, Eye slits were lengthing around my head.
At 150 mph, my whole upper body was bouncing and viborating from the thrashing my face was trying to endure, I tried, and tried to open my eyes, and Finally I popped them open, and guess what I saw!!!!!!!
I saw for the first time in my life , the inside of both my ears at the same time. I must have looked like the Road Runner with a rocket up his A$$
The thing is, all this took place in a matter of maybe 15 seconds!
Maybe it is beliveable, cause when I looked in my right ear, guess what I saw!!!! I saw my left eye peering at my right eye, and visa versa!! I like to think, rather than having a hole in my head, it was the G-Force effect.
It was still one he!! of a ride, Thanks again Gary.
