The bad impressions most folk have of "kit cars" is because they were rolling piles of crap cobbled together on a VW pan. Cobras are not "kit cars" they are replicas of a vintage racecar. His first inpression of your car was a re-bodied VW pan. Your first impression was of an ignorant buffoon. Give him a second chance and a test ride, and he'll definately change his mind about his first impressions of a cobra.

Oh, he'll definitely get a ride in the car next time the opportunity arises. That will erase ANY doubt about the car being a VW.

He was trying to be polite, but also seemed to have a genuine interest in it too. He spent a good amount of time looking at it. He was telling the story of a Mustang Grande that he once owned and how fast that car was.

Should I warn him about the pipes?

As the discussion, which has been beaten to death, goes... the "kit" term is still negative. Though I will never understand why the public thinks a "kit" '32 Ford is awesome, but thinks any other "kit" built the same exact way has a negative implication about it.

Apparently, the guy is into the science fiction scene (I didn't get too into it). If he's a real Trekkie, maybe I should ask him if that was the series with Darth Vader in it.

No, it ain't "real", but it's real fast....

Some people choose to rattle their windows with stereos and speakers... I choose to rattle windows with my right foot.

Sure, take it as an opportunity to educate! First lesson, take him for a ride, say a 0-100-0 ride.
But do mention it is a VW rabit, if he says but the sound of exhaust? just tell him you have a bad muffler on. LOL whatever you do just have fun with him, but chances are once he will go for a ride 0-100-0 either he will stick around for a long time or just think the whole family is nuts, hell we are go figure...
