Where do you put your dipstick on a 460 with a new oil pan without a dipstick hole?
Where do you put your dipstick on a 460 with a new oil pan without a dipstick hole?
My SVO 460 came with the dipstick on the oil pan, but the replacement oil pan from Moroso does not have a place for it.
Any suggestions?
Should I replace the timing cover and get one with the dipstick tube? If so, where do I get that?
Thanks!

Hi rsimoes,
No expert here, but I did have the same problem.

Yep, that's exactly what I did. Used. From a wrecking yard.
Dunno whether there are any differences among the different years/models. I suspect you could go to a wrecking yard and get one from nearly any 429 or 460 and it would fit just fine.
There may even be one available still from Ford.
There seem to be some aftermarket ones available, such as from
Yahoo
-or-
streetrodstuff
-or-
Bronco graveyard
Maybe this'll help get you started

Front Sump?
First, I assume from your post that the new pan is a front sump? If so, I bought a new front cover with dipstick tube and dipstick from Total Performance in Clinton Township, Michigan. A little pricey at about $150 for the set, but fits well in my Canton Road Race pan. If you are interested, let me know and I'll dig out the address & phone number.
Supposedly, they bought the dies from Ford when they went out of production. They were recommended to me by Ford Racing.

Rear sump
A rear sump is not a functional problem. The 460 engine was built in both configurations and either will work fine. The question is whether the timing cover mounted dipstick will work, since it seems to be designed for installation into the deep front sump, not the shallow front area of a rear sump pan.
Can Moroso or your dealer help you with this question?
Good luck!

Moroso used to sell a universal chrome kit that you could drill a hole in the pan and install a dipstick using a compression fitting. Don't know if its still made by them but I assume other pan manufactures have similar kits. Make sure the tube gets mounted to a valve cover or something topside to keep it from vibrating loose at the pan and leaking. The kit I bought for my Jeep required lots of trimming everywhere to make it work.
Still another argument for a custom made pan in my eyes, on a car such as a Cobra, because catalog listed pans are at their very best compromised for our cars.

Go to the hydraulic place close to you and get a tee fitting that will fit your drain tell them you wont the third leg as a JIC fitting. You can attach an A&N fitting on the JIC and a cap on the out let. Locar and some of the street rod venders make a dip stick that has a A&N fitting on one end and an adjustable stick.t let.

Hey rsimoes,
Just found this as another possibility for a front cover with a dipstick provision if you haven't already solved this problem & moved on to the next one
Just do a search for on ebay and at the moment (4/26/03) there are three listed starting at $25.
Regards,
Tom
