David,
It is only fair, that they are not all that fond of me either.
Bill,
I do realize that we are NOT the center of the universe, but when a Cbra gets damaged, stolen, or involved in an accident we hear it in here.
In the last three years I have seen many posts in here regarding vehicles owned by others listed in here when something unusal happened..
I bet, if someone in Akron Ohio got in an accident of some serious nature and the driver had never heard of us before, somehow the accident will still get reported by someone in here, and possibly have pictures to look at as well.
It has happened before and will happen again. Why? Because we are curious, and interested and really care, that one of our own have fallen.
I would be willing to bet, if some one, somewhere got killed this weekend (god forbid) in a Cobra, and it made the newspapers or the local media, by tomorrow afternoon it will be listed in here.
Based on that morbid curiosity of reporting and examining, chastising we do in here, it is safe to say, I can count the number of serious incidents reported here at Club CObra in one, maybe two hands.
Please don't take me wrong, I do know how dangerous these things are. I shake in my boots everytime I get behind the wheel of one. That fear maybe will allow me to live a little longer. I also fear my motorcycle.
You know something, it is a calculated risk I have decided to take. I just want to be allowed to take that chance if I am not hurting others. I am against the helmet laws too.
I don't belive a few hours on the track is going to make me a better driver, and therefore I can do what? Drive faster on the streets because of my vast training for two hours?
I don't want to race anyone, I don't want to kill anyone, I just don't want to be told what all I have to do, so WE can be safe. I prefer to figure that out for myself.

Turk,
There are so many accidents that never make it in to the local papers or TV networks.Just how many do you think do.....I'll bet you less than 50% ever make it in to the media......

Quote fron David Gagnard;
"Auto insurance in general is not a profitable business,homeowners insurance and life insurance is where any company makes it's money. I can quote you numbers till my fingers are tired of typing,but, suffice it to say auto insurance is a losing propsition as far as making a profit goes......".
Thought:
If the auto insurance industry did not make profit, as a whole, in car insurance, they would not do it. Period. End of discussion. The members of the Board of Directors of Whiner's Mutual of Padukah is appointed, and has a fiduciary responsibility to oversee the making of a profit for the owners of the company (the shareholders). To think that they agree to insure cars for charitible or nonprofit reasons in naive, and IMO, unduly influenced by industry generated and managed statistics. Civic duty and moral responsibility certainly did not keep all but three of the medical malpractice insurance carriers from pulling out of Texas when it was no longer profitable. HOGWASH.
I pay $750/ year for agreed upon value or $130k from Dan Hardimann (CC member who owns an SPF).

Hey, maybe we can start 4 simultaneous threads about you someday, "SHOCKED, just SHOCKED", that some terrible accident has happened to you.
Reserve your thread space today! If you wipe out a bunch of other people when you committ your hari-kari, I'll be there to buy your sea ranch out of bankruptcy. Bet on it.
And since the unfortunate friends in Des Moines have to click past the thread index, to read the condolences thread, maybe we should change the name of this thread to "Enough Deceased...", instead of "Enough Dead...."

the Self Righteous...
Awww Brett,
Hey, thanx for your concern(s) man. I appreciate that I can now meet my maker knowing that you will be their to acquire my assets. I will encourage Bandit to beef his up a bit so you won't be quite as disappointed when the time comes to acquire his.
Nice to know that peeps like you are out there full of goodwill and a helping hand. In the spirit of goodwill and exchange I found this in Websters:
banter 1 : to speak to in a witty and teasing manner : 2 : to talk or act in a humorous way
self righteous : convinced of one's own righteousness esp. in contrast with the actions and beliefs of others
In closing I will be sure to leave directions to where I will be interred upon my demise so that you, et al may relieve yourself on my headstone.

Brett;
I'll quote you some numbers.... Here in the parish (county) I live,the company I work for as I have said insures approx. 5000 autos. Last year they paid out 1.5 million dollars more in claims than they took in in premiums!!!!!!!!!!!!!That is for one parish (county),we have 64 parishes in Louisiana.... This company is a national company,in the top ten insurers in the country....The homeowners and life insurance side of the company makes enough profit to offset this loss and show a profit overall for the year,that's the only way they can stay in business....
Companys have to sell auto insurance to attract new customers and build new clinetel.... here in Louisiana,we have had about ten companys come into our state in the last five or so years just selling auto insurance. None have made it longer than 2 years before pulling out!!!!!!!!!!! Farmers has been in our state about a year now and are already talking about pulling out because they are losing soo much on auto insurance claims. They are now trying to sell homeowners insurance but are not selling enough to show a profit.
It is a fact of life in any business,you have to make a profit or you go out of business.... When claims payouts exceeds premiums,the only way to recoup and show a profit and stay in business is to raise premiums or be more selective of who you insure and what type of vehicles you insure.... Some companys are more selective than others and thereby do better than others,but as we have seen here in Louisiana,auto insurance is a losing deal..........
I'm sure it is pretty much the same in most states,just read your local paper and look at some of the awards and judgements people are collecting for auto accidents. I'm not saying in some cases they do not deserve the large settlements,but who do you think pays these large settlements?????Surely not the insured person,his insurance company is the one who pays the six and seven figure numbers weather they are justified or not....Then in turn you and I get to pay that back in the form of premiums!!!!!!!!!!!
I do not like paying higher premiums anymore than anyone else here,I have five vehicles insured and pay my fair share and certainly wish my premiums were lower.But I do realize why my premiums are what they are weather I like it or not....I do not think it is the greed of the upper echelon in the insurance industry lining their pockets on my premiums. I think it has to do a lot more with our mind set these days as well as our judicial system,you know,anyone can sue anyone for anything, but that's another thread and I will not start that here or now....
Respectfully;
David

In light of the recent fatal drag race, your teasing, humorous banter is so witty.
I don't feel too self rightous when I have to go in to the E.R. at 2 a.m to treat some invincible studmuffin whom the paramedics have recently vacuumed off the highway.
David- if,
"Companys have to sell auto insurance to attract new customers and build new clientel...."
then, it is the cost of doing business.
And, while I do not disagree with the passing of the buck to the legal system, I am SO over the "lawyers blaming the insurance carriers/insurance carriers blaming the lawyers" tap dance.
The fact is, that unless you wrap your Cobra around a tree trunk, you don't need either of them.

I agree 100% with that........Just sometimes the costs are too high to stay in business....

I wouldn't sell auto insurance in Louisiana either!
The 1.5 million lost: what percentage is that of the total premiums paid? 10%? 20%? 30%?
How much were premiums increased this year?
These companies that pulled out of La. are still in business in other states?
Just curious. I have absolutely no sympathy for any insurance company. If they do suffer a loss, all they have to do is raise rates, cancel your policy, or pull out of your state.

Experience the joys of freedom!

Note: do not go there, if you are weak in the stomach. Or, as they say on TV, "some content may be deemed as offensive...".
We are a FREE people, and we should have the right to do whatever the F&%* we want, and let our tax dollars, insurance premiums, whatever, pick up the tab. After all, we're FREE! And, "isn't that what we pay taxes for, anyway"?
This rant is "brought to you by... post count #289". I'll have to start planning for what I am going to say on post count #427. Hopefully, better than this.

Look, I'm not perfect either. I have a particular soft spot for peanut butter, and spending too much time on the internet, when I should be getting my work done. It's just that when I screw up, I try not to brag about it, in fear that I might be an example to somebody who looks to me for guidance, like my patients, kids, or others who follow what others do. That's all.
Heck, I'd kinda like a sea ranch, what ever that is!

Brent,
I hope that you attend the DV Spring Fling in June and meet some of the folks in person. Martin (SeaRanch) and others will be there and we promise not to entice you into anything that your patients will use against you. But then again, we're Gasholes and we frequently embellish the truth.
