There are probably driveshaft shops in your area who cut down, balance and modify driveshafts . There is a market out there for such work..check yellow pages. I do not think modifying your Dad's 97 Cobra DS will compromise it in any way. Mine came back from a 91 stock shaft , shortened to 10 3/4", balanced, new joints , yoke, all welds ground smooth and painted black for about $90. Whether you need an aluminum shaft at such short length is a personal preference.
