Default Trivia time--what car and driver?

Here's one that's probably too easy for the eagle-eyed, all-knowing members of this forum: Which Cobra is this, who's behind the wheel, and what happened during this race that Cobra fans are still talking about?

Thanks to Terry Krystofiak for kindly supplying the original picture.

Wild a$$ed guess,

American Road Race of Champions in 1967 (where Dick Smith became the SCCA's A/P National Champion, and went an incredible 198 mph).

The picture shows 3035 with the paint scheme Smith raced it in, before he painted it red and put "198" on the doors. I'd only seen one picture of the car in the "Daytona" colors, a black & white photo in the "Shelby's Wildlife" book. I believe Terry Krystofiak got this picture from Dick's longtime mechanic. Terry has some more details about the events of that day that I hope he'll share with us here--

I've seen another color view of that butt ugly scheme somewhere...seems it was on a straight and in a group of cars, but I can't remember where...I be looking.

It's also before the damn ugly bumper thingy he put on too!

No accounting for taste.

Bob,

I didn't know the car ever had this color scheme. Very interesting photo. The car was red the first time I saw it in about '68. I thought it had always been that color.

Jamo, your post jogged my memory (not an easy thing to do ). I recall a shot of the car on the banking, surrounded by MkII GT40's or some such. Does that ring a bell? Methinks it's a photo from one of Friedman's books, perhaps--

The Cobras had an easy time of it. By that point in history, they were the only cars making up A/P.
