Question What's your 0 to 60 time?

Hi all,

I am considering getting a Backdraft and am trying to decide on an engine. I am partial to the Roush engines (can't beat the 2 year warranty) and am considering the 402r/sr and the 427r/sr. I have seen the dyno sheets on these engines and am trying to figure out some 0 to 60 times, and 1/4 mile times.

Anyone with any numbers with these engines? They don't necessarily have to be in a BDR, any other make is OK, I am not planning on taking my car to a drag strip I just want to get an idea in comparison to some production vehicles.

0 to 60 time is traction constrained in a Cobra and will be heavily dependent upon suspension, tires, gearing, and driver ability (in addition to the engine).

That said, I believe Greg Schroeder runs in high 10s with his SPF (Roush 427 with modifications).

My best 0 to 60mph is 4 seconds...more than that is illegal so I don't know

I have a 427R in a Superformance. The engine is "stock" except for a custom AED Holley 850 cfm double pumper with mechanical secondaries.
The car has Olthoff custom Bilsteins and sway bar, 3.31 Torsen third member,
Steeda differential brace and 295/50/15 Avons on the rear. Best time to date is 11.53 / 124.55 mph / 1.7625 60 ft time. As has been said, these cars are severely traction limited. It's a matter of feeding as much throttle as possible without giving up traction. Have fun!

mph or feet?

2.0 60 ft, soft launch with 600 plus horse side oiler. Rebuilt, 500 plus horse. 60 ft time remained the same, 1/4 ET dropped 3 mph and just under a 1/10th of a second.

This pretty much shows what ever horse power you can't put to the ground is wasted except at the end of the 1/4 mile. At the end of the 1/4 is typically where a big block outshines a small block even if there the same cubic inches, now figure that one out!

Excalibur, I meant 0 to 60 mph. I should have been more specific . But your post lends itself to another question. Which is more important for a fast street car, torque or HP?

I have owned a C5 Corvette and 2 different M3s. I don't race so most of my driving is on the streets or at highway speeds. The reason I was looking at the Roush "sr" engines is that they have a high torque at low rpms allowing you to get to speed faster, I think. Is my thinking correct?

To many variables to make a blanket statement/opinion for me. A rule of thumb may provide a guideline: Short stroke 'builds rpm' quicker, which would be in conflict with 'more torque' gets you there quicker. Consider this: Small blocks generally 'rule' in the 1/8th mile. They 'build rpm' quicker with their shorter stroke. Big Blocks, having a longer stroke and generally better breathing continue to pull strong at the end, where small blocks tend to run out of power. Yet big blocks almost always have more torque. The 289 Cobras ran the 1/4 in the 12 second range, as did the 427's, which were quicker. The BIG difference was seen in mph at the end, the big blocks were substantially faster than the small blocks in mph.

So which one is quicker? In fact, what the heck IS a 'big block' these days? It used to be clear, 289 small, 427 big. Now we got 351 Windsors sporting 427 cid. Big or small block? 351 short stroke builds rpm quicker than 351 bore/stroke to 427? To many variables in the engine, not to mention tires, gearing, fuel feed, driver, trans, etc. etc.

Some say torque wins the day over horse power in the 1/4, I'm not one of them...

I figured you meant 0-60 mph, but it's worthy to also consider the 0-60 ft time, especially when it's 'stop light to stop light' around town!

IMHO, you want a lower torque for these cars. For example, look at a nascar engine. They push like 800hp and 400 tq. I'm not saying a cobra should be that drastic, but I would relate torque to traction. The higher the tq, the more you will have to be gentle on the gas to keep from breaking traction.

Like excaliber said about the 600hp and the 500hp... once you hit that limit, your hp and tq figures are just for show and could in fact make the car harder to drive. The idea, unless you are one of those guys who has to have everything better than the next person, is to find that happy medium where you have all the power you NEED, not want (any car guy never has enough), and good driveability.

From my perspective, I have not seen one person complaining about any of the roush engines. They all say nothing but great things and you can't beat a 2yr warranty!

There is an article developing in one of the Kit magazines that will demonstrate this. I'm surprised it has not started surfacing yet. I do know that the Backdraft representative vehicle was equipped with a Roush 402SR (twist wedge) out of all the powerplants that Reg could have sent.

I will look for some numbers from that event.

4.1. And I have to shift into 3rd at 54 MPH. Imagine if I could hold it in 2nd.

That is with drag radials & 3.73 gears

I have a BDR #461 with a Roush 402R and a TKO 600 5 speed. This is a great balance engine for the money if you go the Roush route. The advertised HP was 515 and 500 tq. The engine dynoed at 484 hp. The engine has a mean idle, revs quickly, and pulls the car hard. You still have to start with a rolling start and then ease into the throttle or you will just break loose the tires. You can go big and go for the 427R, but unless you absolutely have to have a "427", I don't think you wil find much difference for the money. Put it towards the tranny or another item.

I don't have any time slips for comparison, but when you own one of these cars with almost any engine combo, the only car you should be afraid of is another cobra or one with blue lights.

A couple of years ago, maybe 3 Mike Lane's FFR did a few 0-60s before he pulled the 5.0 EFI mild build motor (maybe 325 350 fwhp). Times were 4.9 seconds, but he had a hard top on, 70 lb. of junk in the trunk, 180 passenger and it was Jan. The next day he installed a 408W. He never tried to time it. Sold that car and build a Cobra with a KC 461. He said his next Cobra will have a 408W.

Perhaps most of you guys have forgotten Justa6 who used to post here on a regular basis. With his 274 CI naturally aspirated Cobra he ran in the mid 10's consistantly.
Now tell me all about cubic inches.

I own a stock 2006 Trailblazer SS as my daily driver and have not taken it to the track but I thought you might find the examples below interesting, stock they are turning around 14 flat or better in the ¼ mile. The tune is what really makes them run but notice the 60’ times.
