Talking about Garage Mahals...I have enjoyed reading this guy's site:
http://www.theautoist.com/garage-mahal.htm

Has a decent MG collection too!

My garage measures 13 1/2 x 27. I have 4 eight foot high output florecent light fixtures, 2 on each side. The walls are painted white. At night it looks like the sun just rose in the garage. I had to put black trash bags on the windows so not to keep the neighbors up when I'm working late at night!

I have a 40' x 40' shop, with 10 eight foot flourescents. I just swapped them out for the smaller. single pin bulbs and electronic ballasts: they will light at zero degrees. It doesn't usually get that cold here in the swamp, but the humidity was giving me fits with my old bulbs.

I broke my shop into four sections, for lights. I do have some mounted on the wall, at about 10' (roof is 14') and it all works good.

Good luck!

As a guide ......

using T12 (1" diameter tubes) at 9' from the floor

white textured walls and ceiling with diffusers on the lights.

1' of tube for every 8-9sq.ft of floor area.

Default Thanks!

Wow! Had not been able to log on for a couple days and am overwhelmed with the responses! You guys have some serious light. My garage is attached with living space above so unfortunately no room for sunlights. I only have 2 windows in the front and widows in the garage doors so I may be limited for natural light. Thanks for the tips on the garage floor and walls. I was planning an epoxy coating. I'll keep the walls a bright white. The garage will be fully insulated and I have a PTAC Airconditioner. With the t-8 bulbs I should be ok with the temperature issues.

I'm going to go with 8 of the t-8 fixtures and compliment them with a 150 watt halogen in each corner as was suggested. Hopefully this will get me through for the short term and I can upgrade later if I need to. Thanks again for the info! I'll post a picture when I get it all together. I've got a ways to go. The roof trusses go on tomorrow!

JB
