I don't believe it really makes a difference if you insure it as a 65 or 2001 as long as the coverage is there. It stands to reason that a 2001 vehicle would be more than a 65. mine is insured as a 65. I would want to clarify if there is any coverage variables. There are sooooooo many variables from company to company and state to state. The main thing is to make sure the coverages are comparable and make sense.

It' not unusual for an insurance company to require you to place other vehicle or even your household with them when insuring high exposure items

MacGyver - Not only do have differences from state to state, insurance is based on your zip code and all of the standard stuff like age, driving record, etc.
John - 1,500 miles?? You'll do that driving up and down the coast a couple of times. Hopefully you'll join the BACC for breakfast in Mountain View or Pleasanton some time. That's 75 miles round trip right there. I put 2K miles on my car in 6 months.
BTW - I went with NW Insurance. Agreed value and paid a little more for 5K miles.

Check with American Modern which has various classes for their Collector Car series using Agreed Value, there will be a limitation on annual mileage as well as usage, i.e., not daily transportation. I had to submit a number of photos showing all sides and angles as well as the interior, engine and trunk. Also, pictures of the garage, both empty from the outside with the door open and with the car inside
Collector Car Insurance - American Modern Insurance Group
They will not insure kit cars if home built, must be a turn key or professionally built

John - I just re-read your post. With 5 cars, 1,500 miles per year might be plenty for you. Hey, got any spare garage space if buy another toy?

Kind of hit this post a little late but you always want to be sure you have an agreed value clause on your policy. Some carriers will not write an agreed value on vehicles that are registered less than 15 years of age. They also sometimes charge more for vehicle less than 15 years of age. With collectible insurance we do not rate by zip code, we leave that up to the daily driver companies to do. We write 99% of the time on an agreed value and have very competitive rates with Infinity & American Modern. If you would like a quote just give me a call or drop me an email. We do not require a regular use vehicle be insured with us. There are some additional problems this can cause you down the road, and will explain individually as it can be a little long.
Glad to help you if we can.

I also went with Midwest Classic for my ERA FIA. $696/yr, 6,000 miles in Maryland. $60K agreed value. Great service also.
State Farm couldn't be bothered to return my phone calls much to my brother-in-law's chagrin since he is a SF agent in MI. He told me that he has written policies for these types of cars many times.
