CSX3002--for those who have pics, what is the decal on the fender
Sorry I meant CSX3002. I don't know how to change the headline now that I typed it.
I was just looking at Friedman's softbound book RACING COBRAS published by Petersen some years ago (and in hardbound by a Newport Beach firm some years before) and noticed he has a front 3/4 view of the brushed aluminum finished (unpainted ) Cobra that was captioned "the first and only factory sponsored big block Cobra" The picture is printed on lousy porous paper so I can't see what the decal is on the side. It looks sort of like a Thunderbird decal, with two wings going straight out. The decal compared to the side vent looks about 6" long and 2" high. I can't see what's in the center. Could this be a H & M insignia? If makes me wonder if the engine was installed by H & M as they had lots of racing 427 engines at the time from NASCAR. I also find it odd that, since I recall a picture of this car from the rear 3/4 that it had a glove compartment when I thought racing 427 Cobras had no glove compartment, but maybe they sorted that out once they began racing it, being surprised the first time the door flopped open at speed.
I am also confused where the two pictures were shot. I think one in England (the test track shot from the rear 3/4 with Remington visible) while the other shot I've seen shows cars with black and yellow Calif. plates.

3002 did use a 289 drop dash with glove box. All the pics I have of the car shows Goodyear decal, Autolite, Sperex VHT, and Koni. Typically the Koni is a triangle however they did produce a set of wings. Perhaps you are referencing Koni?

Unlikely that it was Holman and Moody. As you say they were more involved in other areas of racing and really did not get along with Shelby. I know you are surprized by that statement.

3002 was the first "big block" car, but it was a modified 2000 series car, and not the first car built specifically as a big block car. So yes, it had a glove box.

I don't think Wallace is referring to any final stickers on 3002, as raced.
I think he means the gizmo on the side of the car in this delivery picture
I always saw it as 'something' held on by masking tape.

Can't remember which ex Shelby employee I overheard speaking at an early SAAC convention in California, but I believe it was something like this (which was actually taped to the trunk lid of the car when officially delivered as a joke to the original owner)

Sal you are thinking of the Flip Top car. CSX3002 is the first 4 inch frame rail, coil over shock, Cobra.

It looks a bit like this 40th anniversary GT500 KR emblem. Could it have been an early prototype Cobra emblem?

One other possibility-Indy 500 emblem
It could be an Indy decal. As I recall the 1978 Indy Pace Car Replica by Chevrolet, it had a winged decal on the rear fender, each wing about 4 inches long and something vertical in the center, maybe a tire front 3/4 view.
You can see it on this website
http://www.indypacecars.com/1978.htm
I think that logo has been used on Indy cars for generations. Now what it would be doing on a Cobra big block prototype is anybody's guess except that it is well known some Shelby shop employees were ex-USACers and thought any car that wasn't a full-on race car wasn't worth much, so maybe they stuck it on to say "At last we got a car that's worthy of being a race car."
I could print it out and send it to Phil Remington at AAR and see if he remembers since he's in some of the pictures and was there when it was tested or is there someone else who remembers the car when it was in prototype form?

Now I found the Indy emblem pictured better
http://www.indypacecars.com/
but it's a no-go as the tire looks too tall to be that emblem. Has wings, though

Koni shock absorber decal on Ebay-but center is too big
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KONI-...spagenameZWD1V
It has wings but the center seems too big. Still Koni was a supplier and might have burned the midnight oil to develop the shocks for the 427 so been proud to put their badge on it if only momentarily.

I blew the picture up and near as I could tell it looks a lot like the photo MadMiles posted of the Koni winged logo. Couldn't get a really clear view because of the degrading of the original photo.
