Ebay Kirkham sells for $68,655!

Ronbo, a point of clarification if I may. A Pond block or a Shelby alloy block are a fine choice, and NOT to be compared to a Honda power plant! The point is, a date coded 1965 'real deal' side oiler is very rare, like obtaining the holy grail if you would. The point was in specifying a 'superior replica' build does not mean 'anything goes', just because it's a replica. Some cars, like this one, are built to a higher standard of accuracy, which is uncommon with most of todays builds. That INCLUDES Kirkhams! David K, has mentioned several times he rarely finds a customer today who WANT original specs. Because of that the price for those specs have gone up a bunch. It's cheaper to buy 'billet' stuff now than original parts.

I think you would be hard pressed to put together a new Kirkham with these specs for under a $100K. If you did it's gonna take a lot of time, energy and money to pull it off. Much easier to simply build a 'modern' Kirkham utilizing the typical available parts: Billet suspension, Baer brakes, alloy Shelby block or a 428, etc. would save a bunch over an original side oiler, suspension, brakes, etc.

Is a modern Kirkham spec'd car faster, handle better, ride better and is more reliable? NO doubt, but then again a bunch of modern cars can say that. A bunch of replicas can say that as well. But THIS Kirkham captures the soul and spirit of an original like few replicas do today.

But maybe your right, maybe you could build to these specs for under a $100K, if your well connected and do some digging for the right stuff.

Well nothing like objective numbers. Here is the breakdown of the options on that car. Add $15,000 for the suspension upgrade (original specs), $15,000 for the engine, $2,000 for the tranny and bell. You are over $100,000. I'm surprised since you just bought a Kirkham that you didn't think it would be over $100,000 for this. This car proves what I'ver been saying you don't get your cash back for some of these expensive options.

Did you read the thread. We were dicussing the cost to duplicate this beutiful car. People thought I was crazy saying it couldn't be duplicated for under $100,000. I was proving my point with objective criteria from the website. It is difficult to argue with numbers. They are not subjective!!!!!! Anyway, I'm glad the buyer and seller are happy.

Chris, I read the thread and my opinion is that it doesn't matter. Your opinion is that most Kirkham options are a waste of money. My opinion is that everyone is unique and a stainless steel frame, aluminum rear end and a polished finish might be important to some. When my Kirkham is finished, I will definitely have a lot more than $68,000 in mine. A lot more.

Excaliber believes that a period correct suspension and a date coded '65 side oiler block might be the "holy grail" (or at least the block). I don't. A Kirkham is more valuable to me if it has an aluminum block (Pond or Shelby) and the latest Kirkham billet (light) suspension. We're all different.

Nonetheless, Bud is happy and the gentleman from Texas got a great deal. There's nothing like good timing. I've never had it.

I'm not trying to grind this out but everyone seems to be missing the point.

I was not refering to how much it would cost now to build this car.

I had stated that Bud didn't loose as much as people think because if you read his ebay ad you'll see that a lot of the options were included at the time. He also mentioned (in the ad) he's a distributor of shelby parts. If Kirkham has plucked away some standard items then the cost has increased even if the base price has remained the same.

I agree that the car was worth more, I saw a similar one sell for around $95k about 1 1/2 months ago on ebay.

Bud, like many here lived his dream. It's tough to put a price on that. Not to mention Cobras would be about as exciting as a Camery if they were all the same. (well, not quite that dull)

Guess I shouldn't mention how tempted I was to stick a Boss 429 in mine...

Ronbo, thats a reasonable point, what it cost then vs what it cost now, profit/loss scenarios. I recall that Shelby offered a glass car for around $35K some years ago and Kirkham immediatly followed that with a similiar offer. Now some CC members (at least one) had to wait about 2 years for Shelby to come through, but he DID get his car at a VERY nice price, and without doubt sold it and made some money on the deal to boot!

I won't speculate and it's not 'polite' to wonder how Bud Man did on this deal, if he's happy, let it go and good for him. Great for Flip as well. On rare occasions 'good deals' come around, usually when I'm broke at the time.

I made some money on Cobras over the years myself, broke even on others and expect to lose on some. It all comes out in the wash, meanwhile, I'm having a ball, life is good and my ERA is running great! These cars should be never be considered an investment, if you get lucky and break even or take a reasonable loss on a resale, you done good!

I saved a BUNCH rebuilding my own motor, sure took a lot of work though, sweat equity, it's a beautiful thing.

It's funny how quickly things gave changed. In 2000 I saw a concours Boss 429 restoration sell for $60,000. 3 years after it doubled in price. I wish I had $20,000 in 1999 I had the oportunity to buy an ex drag boss with a complete but aprart SOHC 427. Unfortunatel, I didn't have the cash and the car sold. Nowadys the motor is worth more than that

I'm still living in Hawaii but will be spending more time in Texas in the future.
We are in the process of getting furniture - it is a brand new house and we
love the location. When I saw the specs on the Kirkham I had to take a shot
at it and darned if I didn't get it. A long time dream fulfilled. This way I have
a Cobra to play with no matter which house I'm at. Life is good!
