Default Battery light does not come on

This is a recent phenomenon. I have a standard 3 wire Ford alternator fitted with one of these devices for a single wire conversion

http://store.alternatorparts.com/partnof7078.aspx

Just this morning I noticed that the battery light was not coming on when I turn the key. The battery seems to be charging although I have no voltage from the convertor to the warning light.

Anyone know of a way I can tell if its the alternator or the convertor thats faulty?

Use a volt/ohm meter and with the car running measure from the back terminals of the alternator if you can get to them in your car. If you have voltage coming out, go to the input to the converter and see if it is there. If you have voltage going into the converter and none coming out, then you have most likely found your problem. Normally the battery should be reading about 14/15 volts when the car is running so that is what should be coming from your converter.

Hi Ron thanks for the reply. I'll test that at the weekend. I have three terminals on the alterantor: STA, BAT and FLD. Do you now which ones supply tha actual voltage?

The BAT terminal supplies the voltage. For diagrams and a discussion of the light bulb that is not working see the following thread in which I included charging circuit diagrams and text from automotive books -- how the light bulb works is a neat little issue that a lot of people get wrong. First Drive today - speedo and electrically issues / help?
