simple.... 2ea 1/4" thick, 2' x 4' black welding blankets in the trunk and a 2x2 piece behind the passenger seat in the cab. I drape the pipes for the first 30 minutes at the car show and other activities while having a piece inside if there's someone entering/exiting that I have a special concern for. It keeps the law suits down and even more terrifying, burns to a child.

Opening the hood latches after a drive was my method of getting broken in. Wasn't paying close attention, but I think I will in the future.

Here are two posible solutions to the burn problems around the cobra.
Install a small 12"x12" welding blanket on each side door sill. Just roll it out and then roll it back when done entering or exiting the hot car. Blankets are held on with two small straps attached to the inside sills with snaps.
Arm protection: Eliminate those pesky scraps and burns while working on the hot motor by simply sliding on a couple of Gym Socks over your arms, with the feet portion cut off. The socks offer good protection when reaching down alongside the motor.
These two solutions have save me a lot of "hurt".

My wife burned her leg thru her jeans. She still has a football shaped burn mark on the back of her left leg.

Thanks guys! I think maybe my standard outfit I'll wear when going out with him in his new toy will be my knee high boots :-). You think that would offer me the protection I need?? I'm not much into pain :-).

Nope.
Go with the advice of standing up and then stepping out of the car. Otherwise you will get bit.

Everyone gets bit at least once.
It reinforces the learning.
Remember too that the pipes stay hot for a little while and that when getting back into the car (say at an ATM [he said knowingly]) you should beware also.
A good bite will be about 1x2", be bubbly and gooey, may leave skin on the pipe, and will have people asking "what's cooking?"

Well I, for one, would never even think of doing such a thing. Maura, after repeatedly frying the back of my ankle, I now carry a welding blanket in the car. Mostly for my passengers, as I don't really care all that much about me (but I do use it, when I can remember to reach behind the seat and pull it out). I also put them over the pipes when I pull in somewhere (like a car show) where there is the possibility that little kids will run up and touch them before I can stop them. My ceramic pipes cool down within a few minutes, but initially they can be upwards of 400 degrees.

I don't know of any business that sells welding supplies near me (not that they don't exist, I just don't know about them). Anyway, what would be a good place to pick up a welding blanket?

That one that you see in my hand is called the "Velvet Shield" and I got it from toolfetch.com

Did you buy 2 of them (one for each side), or buy one and cut it in half?

I bought one and then cut it with scissors. It's very easy to cut.

The side pipe temp is about 400F, closer to the engine where the headers are is about 700F.

The last really good burn I got was from the aluminum radiator tube that heads over to the surge tank. No, it doesn't get to 400 degrees, but it will burn the crap out of your forearm if you're thinking about something else when you stick your arm down the front of the engine.

Summit sells the Velvet Shield in a 4' x 6' sheet, which is enough to do a couple of cars. Cut a piece as long as your seat, fasten it under the rail (or the seat if it's bolted to the floor) roll it out and cut it off at the bottom of the pipe. Roll it up and stow it between the seat and the body. If your carpet is black you won't even notice it.

Does anyone have any ideas as far as removing burnt nylon from the side pipes? I have been told that "easy off" is not a good option.
thanks
