Hot side pipes

My b/f just finished his cobra replica and was showing it off to me. In his description he warned me about the side pipes being hot after driving some. I was just wondering how hot these things get and do I need to be careful getting in/out after riding some.

Don't wear synthetics (they melt (to your skin)), wear cotton, rayon.

The scab only lasts for a few months.

If your friend didn't warn you a dozen, then warn you again when you were about to get out of the car, then he's sleeping on job. :JEKYLHYDE

A nice feel (of the pipes) after a ride will forever answer your question.

Don't get out of the car like you do a normal car. Put your hand on the back of the seat, or side of the car, stand up and step out of the car. Get back in the reverse. Step in with both feet( one at a time of coarse) and then slide into the seat. I got burned once when my car broke down. That was on the front of my shin when I looked under the hood and hit the pipes where they come out the side. Extremely Hot. SIZZLE!!!

A thought (after 4 Carlsberg Elephants before dinner)
We are actually attracted to a car which inflicts pain on it's owner. %/

Bernica 04-13-2009 05:50 PM

Scooter's right. You have to learn to kindof jump in/out of the car when it's hot.
The first thing I tell anyone that gets in or out is "stay away from the pipes!"
There are a few photos in the gallery of folks that have learned the hard way.
I, for one, try not to wear shorts when I drive. I have the scars that taught me!!

On engine shut off our standard mantra of "HOT PIPES" can be followed up by aloe gel that we keep in the glove box:eek:.

I think they call them "Snake Bites" anywhere in the world.

I agree, if you own a cobra, you're going to be "snake bit" !
And,.... that's a good thing. ;)

flipscobra 04-13-2009 08:54 PM

Snake Bitten a few tmes, put me out of work for a week 1 time, got infected. Did it opening the hood latches. I watch out for kids when we go to a cruisein, or car show. I warn everybody about how hot they are.

Opening the hood latches is also how I got bitten...wearing shorts that day. Also, melted the sleeve a fleece jacket checking under the car one day.

Mine used to be really bad - then I got them ceramic coated
and what a difference that made - they don't get nearly as hot.

undy 04-14-2009 04:05 AM

simple.... 2ea 1/4" thick, 2' x 4' black welding blankets in the trunk and a 2x2 piece behind the passenger seat in the cab. I drape the pipes for the first 30 minutes at the car show and other activities while having a piece inside if there's someone entering/exiting that I have a special concern for. It keeps the law suits down and even more terrifying, burns to a child.

Thanks guys! I think maybe my standard outfit I'll wear when going out with him in his new toy will be my knee high boots :-). You think that would offer me the protection I need?? I'm not much into pain :-).

Nope.

Go with the advice of standing up and then stepping out of the car. Otherwise you will get bit.

tbracker 04-14-2009 06:57 AM

Everyone gets bit at least once.

It reinforces the learning.
Remember too that the pipes stay hot for a little while and that when getting back into the car (say at an ATM [he said knowingly]) you should beware also.
A good bite will be about 1x2", be bubbly and gooey, may leave skin on the pipe, and will have people asking "what's cooking?"
