Re: my Classic Roadster - Jaguar, Corvette, and once, "is that some GM
Camaro" That guy was brilliant (this was 4 or 5 years ago).
I haven't been out in the Kirkham enough to have dealt with it - yet.

I overheard a woman ask my tennis coach if that was his corvette. He wishes...lol. An older english lady said my car reminded her of a "put put". My car doesn't go "put put" does it? I hope not. While I was filling up with gas I heard these kids on skateboards go by and one said "that car is sick" to which I replied "no it's a Cobra". It's all good.

MG is the most common mistaken identity, and once someone thought my car was a Cheetah.

The kids do pretty well recognizing it's a Cobra thanks to the video games. One kid even said the Cobra was great on the straights, but was too hard to handle on the turns.

A little different since I have a coupe, but Viper is the number one "guess". Aston Martin, Jag, Ferrari, and Vette are all popular answers as well. One kid ran up to me in a parking lot asking me what it was. When I told him it was a race car from 1965, he sai "Woaaaa - I thought it was from the future!" Cracked me up, but quite a complimentary statement for Pete Brock's design!

While at the London Cobra Show one year I had an alternator go bad. A fellow member of the Capital Area Cobra Club ( Capt. Crunch) drove me to an Autozone for a new one in his 427 cobra. While waiting for me to come out, a woman commented to him that he sure had a nice bugeye sprite!

While stopped at a gas station recentley, a guy walks over and says although he doesn't like Mustangs, he liked mine. I replied that they grow on you don't they.

One of the most common questions I used to be asked was, "Is that the same kind of car that James Dean was killed in?" Most of the young kids, seem to know it was a Cobra replica and they knew the years of the originals too.

What a great thread.

In some form or another, my car has been:

Corvette
Austin Martin
VW ( if you can believe that )
"one of them cars" ( didn't understand the remark, but I do remember it )
jag

While at the 2007 London show, I was the stager for most of the day. I could here off to my right a man telling his child that all these old Porsches were running on nitro.

Dang.

I was filling up one time way out in west Texas when 2 young cowhands straight off the ranch in an old pickup pulled in. They kept looking and looking, finally one of them worked up the nerve to ask me "Sir, is that a Jaguar?" No I said, it's a Cobra, designed by Carrol Shelby, to which he replied "a lady built that?". I laughed for miles leaving that town....

When my first cobra was brought home my neighbor, a retired professor, asked "is that an old corvette"? At a stop light in Miami a young couple rolled down the window and "wow that is really cool .. is that the new BMW?". One more knowlegeable Brit followed me a couple of miles in the Florida Keys until I stopped for coffee - and he pulled in to ask "is it real", as he was familiar with them having been built in the UK by AC.

Juggernaut 06-09-2009 12:30 PM

It's been mistaken for a "factory" built car, not one built in a garage.:D

Last year my son and I cruised up to the local Saturday night get-to-gether and as I drove in this old man held up his hand as to stop us. I stop and the old man said, "Aston Martin?" I'm older too and I didn't understand what he wanted so I said - "what?" He pointed at my cobra and said "Aston Martin?" I simple reply, "yes" and then I heard him say, "at least I got one right"

Someone asked me if my Cobra was front-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive!

Tommy 06-09-2009 05:43 PM

My favorite misidentification was by a 4 year old boy who stood stunned, staring at my bright red car. I looked at his mother and she said, "He thinks it's Lightning McQueen from the animated movie Cars."

onefastmustang 06-09-2009 07:50 PM

The previous CEO of my company thought it was an Aston Martin.

I have also had Corvette, Jaguar and prototytpe miata.

This is a bit off topic ... as I don't have a Cobra ... but I do have a Triumph and when people ask me what kind of car it is, and I tell them it's a Triumph.

A surprising number (at least to me) of them have never heard of Triumph. Most of them figure out it's British, but then again the Union Jack plastered on the rear fender is a bit of a hint. ;)

During a gas stop on my return trip from last year's LCS a young boy asked what was in my (Serpent Express) trailer. I opened the front access panel for him and he gleefully explained to his Dad that he saw "the real" Lightning McQueen!!:)
