I keep a $10 "shorty" Pep Boys bottle jack in the trunk, along with two of Rob Frink's billet collapsable jack stands (which have two perches built-in for different heights). Also a can of Fix-A-Flat.

FWIW, another great option (for inflating) is to buy the portable compressor/repair kit that came with the '01-04 Corvette Z06. It also includes the sealer liquid. Very portable and readily available on FleaBay, and made for a car that does not have a spare tire (like the Z06). You just need a cigarette lighter accessory jack.
