Cobra anti theft prevention

Although I am a small distance from completing this car (18months to 2years) the possibility of criminals removing all my hard work etc is always there especially with unemployment etc going up, so I am trying to build in some theft prevention and come up with these ideas the first being a must,

1. Insurance.
2. Electrical cut off which we have to have for racing anyway, but that will be easy to find even if its hidden.
3. Removal of the MSD ignition rotor, would stop them driving it away, but a hassle to remove and install each time I want to use the car.
4. Fuel cut off valve but that may not be a good idea on the pressure side of the circuit as could promote pump damage.
5. Dig a hole in the shed concrete floor and have a large eye concreted in so I can loop a heavy chain around part of the chassis, and hide the cut off saw...!
6. IF THEY WANT IT THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE IT.....!
7. Speak to all my retired excellent neighbours that if I am not with the car and its being removed phone the Police.

Well I have a battery cut off switch which is keyed, plus a switch on the electric fuel pump and a removable steering wheel.

When all else fails there is option 6 and then 1.

I would weld the Chassis to the floor of the garage and then for added security take off all 4 Wheels off...or better yet park it inside the living room

I think the battery cutoff key is the best. If someone has one and a screwdriver and wants the Cobra, there is nothing else that is going to keep it safe and he wins the prize. Additionally, there is only a very specialized recovery market for parts. Most of us are here. My wife asked Dave Murray this exact question - should I get a LoJack - and that was his response.

Of special note is that the primary market (whole car, not parts) is overseas, and if they want it, LoJack isn't going to matter. And who would want to steal and drive a car that is a registry?

Bottom line is the comprehensive (theft) coverage on my Cobra is less than my truck.

Good comments, I forgot one other deterent "Burglar Alarm"

Limited market and being an old style car a lot of the young thieves would go for the modern stuff, another market with breaking the car down there are a lot of nice bits that would go very well if you were building more or less what I am building for a semi serious club race car.

#6 is exactly correct. But, no sense making it easy for them. That's really the trick, make it more difficult.

Electric cut off switch, with the key removed. Don't leave the keys in the ignition. Remove the steering wheel. If I'm going to be out of town for a while, I remove 1-2 wheels, and put them in the basement.

When I travel, I remove the electric switch key, and remove the steering wheel. I cover the car. And I use a motorcycle cable lock through the wheel spokes and around a suspension piece. I do the same thing with the trailer, cable through the wheels.

It can still be dragged away, but some one might notice that.

But if all that fails, the car is insured. I'll be heart broken. But, I'll build another one.

A friend used to have fake coil wire. He made it so it would not conduct current but it looked exactly like a regular coil wire. If he was going to leave the car somewhere out (or in his garage) and wanted to disable the car he just put the fake on and hid the real one.

That doesnt stop em I have had a car stolen and burnt out, it was insured. I live in a good area, but recently had a package of parts ex USA stolen after the courier delivered them without obtaining a signature. The neighbour had a swing chair value $400 stolen the same day, yes this little island still has criminals like your big country that cant or wont hold a job down but will grab anything of anyones, without any conscience that it doesnt belong to them.

From the replies its alway good if your away on vacation etc to remove wheels etc and immobilise the ignition so they cant easily start it.

I have an alarm system that covers the house and garage and all gates. Any time it goes off they call the police immediately, but with the cut backs there may be none to call soon. The police drive by every so often and when the new police station is built it will be just about 500' from my house. I also have some hidden disconnect switches for power and breaking certain grounds.

Ant Lo-Jac is a great recovering system. I have a ring bolted into the garage floor and a 20 ton cable that loops the frame. No torches, cutoff tools in the garage. I have the garage blocked with either a truck or cars. The main thing is not to advertise you own the car. I know, you want to show it off. Well I have has friends of friends steal things over the years out of my garage. Motorcycles, blowers, race parts, and other things. I now have 2 dogs, one large and one small. They work great for night time. In the day I have good neighbors that watch each others homes. Not sure in your country but guns are still allowed. A new law in jersey now protects the thiefs from shooting them, well private property is just that. I have short and long range things in the home for protection. If you make things too hard they will burn the car in the garage. You can bet they will scope out what you have done to protect your property. Don't leave car in driveway without a cover on it. The rest of your ideas are good. I still like the claymore idea, if the guy is dumb enough to try and steal you car, he's ready to go to hell in a heartbeat. Rick L. Ps most car are now getting stole by either towtrucks or trailer rigs that are sitting around the corner. They know what the car is worth and how easy it is to re title and paint.

Last summer a guy in Chico which is about 40 miles South/East of here had his stolen. He had just finished it and was getting it ready to take to the paint shop and stopped at the mall there for a couple of minutes. when he came back out it was gone and he has never seen it since. Several witnesses saw a couple of guys loading it onto a roll back but thought it was the owner and a towing service so they never bothered to get much of a description of the truck or people taking the car. This was right in the middle of a big parking lot full of people too.

Shouldn't it be "Theft Prevention" not "Anti-Theft Prevention? Are you the same guy that started the use of "Sway Bar" rather than "Anti-Sway Bar"?

Anyway, Keep it insured, keep it in a locked garage, use a kill switch and park behind it.
