This was the end of a long day (I had been on the road during 10 hours) , the sunset was beautiful but I put my headlight on so that drivers on the right lane could spot me more easily because the only thing I was sorrying a bit was a car switching from his right lane to my left lane without warning.
This was great but the fuel gauge decreased quickly.
I have a 2.88 rear end and a big block 482cu.in.

I have told this before but I hit 159 at Texas Motor Speedway several years ago in my Cobra coming out of Nascar turn 4.....I had replaced my rev limiter from a 6200 chip to 7000 RPM chip. As I crossed the start finish line my enigine went completely silent after a shutter and a bang. I pushed in the clutch and all I could hear was the wind. I would never do that again because of the cost to repair 427 FE. Now I keep my 6000 Rev limiter ship in place and seldom bump up against it (unless I need to clean the dirt off my tires in the country).

Reving a FE too high can be costly. I had a bad experience with that in 2009 at the dragstrip. The cost in dollars was almost equal to the number of RPM.

1091 knots over the ground in an F-18A+ at altitude (14,000ft). That is 1254.6 MPH and about 1.75 times the speed of sound.
670 knots (770 MPH) at the Naval Air Station, FT Worth airshow in 2006 at 100 feet altitude. About 5 MPH of breaking the sound barrier over the crowd.
Cars?....about 147 on the main drag in front of the Cecil Field Naval Air station in Jacksonville , FL in my then new 1994 Corvette.
Cobra?...I don't know yet...should be on the road in Feb.

With a 4 speed close ratio toploader and a 3:73 rear end, I'm topped out at around 135 running out of RPMs.

155mph with Toploader and 3.55 gears, 6500rpm redline. However I don't feel the urge to do this very often, the experience is like it was described here already

Good replies, so ~150mph give or take is about
where gonads, gears or road come into play.
Question for RET_COP, what was the most extreme speeding
ticket you issued (or know was issued) by one of your "co-workers" lol.
I'm sure a 'cuff 'em on the spot' affair and haul his ass downtown.

All these cars are built differently, obviously that is
a consideration that should be taken into account.
You can have these cars built for competition and
designed for 150+ speeds but things like front end
float, chassis flex, suspension setup all play into it.

159.725 at Texas Motor Speedway in the fall of 2007. Absolutely, all it had because the engine let go crossing the start finish line at about 6800 or so RPM's. That was my old 428 CJ engine which I dearly loved. I had some mods to keep the front end down etc. But, it was moving around coming out of Nascar 4 pretty good. Fortunately, none of the oil or water found it's way under my tires after the engine let go.

125 somewhere east of Dallas in the back woods. I would have tried faster, but my ears were about to bleed from the noise.
143 front straight at Texas Motor Speedway with my first driving school with NASA. Running the 460 before my 427. Street tires started dancing around. Scared the piss out of me. Damn near missed turn one clockwise. God that was loud, even with a helmet. That's when I learned to also wear ear plugs when racing.
153 front straight Road America at the KIC last year in the race prepared Mustang. I was still getting past like I was standing still. Big time butt pucker factor.
180 in a drag prepped English Ford Anglia (fully blown Chevy 327?) when I was 15 years old back in New Mexico with my neighbor. Just about crapped my pants. No helmet, but he tightened my 4 point belt until I couldn't breath. Never told my parents.

The speedo was safely past 160 (a little bouncy)
tach said about 5950 (still pulling)
5th (.68 )
4.10 rear gear
325-50-15 tire
pretty dam flighty on a two lane farm road.
Sounded great!
Paul (aka Snakeboy) still blames me for the permanent damage to his left ear.
Sorry Paul…..

I ran out of nerve before I ran out of road and rpm at 150 mph in 5th. Lost my hat at 135. I was surprised the floor mats didn't get sucked out of the car at that speed! SPF with 418W.

3rd less experienced driver...
I was cruising thru the Shenandoah Valley in Luray, Va just getting onto 211. The Backdraft in front of me punches it and all I said was, 'crap, here we go'. My F5 with the 347 (supercharged then)I punched it too to try and keep up. My brother-in-law in his s/c terminator motor F5 follow suit to catch up as well with the backdraft. I got to a point that felt ridiculously too extreme and then I released the throttle. That's when I looked down at the speedo, 125mph. That was nutty! But I am curious to see what my top end is, just to know.
