New Can-Am Series
A Can-Am style race series,Unlimited Racing. Still recall Jim Hall and Hap Sharp racing Chaparral's at Bridgehampton ( Long Island NY )
Chaparral Official Web Site
" The American Le Mans Series over the weekend announced its association with the Unlimited Racing Championship (URC) as the new "Heritage Series" for the ALMS's 2012 season and beyond. The URC will feature identically built NuArt CanAm cars reminiscent of the "glory days" of the Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am) from the 1960s and '70s. "
" These magnificent cars feature spectacular 700-plus hp, big-block V8 engines and state-of-the-art aerospace-quality components with an emphasis on safety."

'Unlimited' race cars would not have a spec chassis. Nor '700 plus' horsepower engines. It's no trick today to build big blocks 900+.

The Golden Age
For me....Can AM....Trans Am....SCCA....FIA...INDY....even NASCAR raced nearly stock cars...maybe it was my age, but it has never been the same...I must not be the only one, given the success of various forms of "historical" events....

Saw them run at Laguna Seca this weekend. They did a few demo laps. They clearly need a little more development before they compete. But boy, are they beautiful, look just like the Mclarens.

I loved Can-Am when it was "run what you brung". I'm not sure about this type of spec. racing. I'm not much for spec. racing, but I will be watching and wishing them well.
Heck, maybe they will come to the new F1 track here in Austin.

I agree about the spec racing thing. The efforts to level the playing field in racing just plays up to the under achievers so they don't pack up their cars and go home. No innovation, no competition between brands, no excitement. Just watered down, prepackaged entertainment.
Having said that, I lusted after the Can-Am McLarens as a kid and these new cars are absolutely stunning.

I agree re the spec racer dung.
This quote: "The URC will feature identically built NuArt CanAm cars reminiscent of the "glory days" of the Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am) from the 1960s and '70s." Is the death of it before it even starts.
What made Can Am so cool was you never knew what someone was going to show up with to stomp the crap out of everyone else. Basically NONE of the cars looked the same because everyone was trying something different.
Granted, the NuArt cars are beautifull and I'd like to see and hear them run once but only once. Seems to me this is just another COT (Car Of Tomorrow) and about as interesting. Sad.

Can-Am cars and "emphasis on safety" in the same sentence is an oxymoron.
A Porsche 917-30 was one of the most fabulous, scariest things I've ever seen. The fact than anyone survived them is a tribute to driving skill.

Well said! Sort of like like making pork the theme ingredient at a vegetarian cook off.

Even the modern F1 cars are basically a spec, following the design rules. If they were all painted the same, would be difficult to determine who made the car.
However, probably would have been more difficult starting the series if the original Can-Am approach was used. Believe it was the twin turbo 917-30 that was so superior, no one else could compete and the series ended.

Yup.
Great story about its development in a book I got recently on Mark Donohue.

Thats the sad reality I suppose. The players themselves lobby to have success regulated away from their opposition instead of upping their own game to compete. We'll never see the like of those magnificent machines again.

From the web site:
" ART - an appealing and provocative word, eliciting thoughts of beauty and intrigue. The NuArt CanAm car is ART in the truest sense of the word. "

October edition of MotorSport magazine has a 5 page article on the light blue # 98 Lola T70 Spyder and the orange # 2 McLaren M1B Can-Am cars. Both cars were at Goodwood.
A quote regarding the McLaren: " The car shakes when the V-8 fires up-or maybe it"s the planet rattling beneath it "

They raced them in Europe since the 90s with a more or less "complete" group of cars. Mostly dominated (by numbers) of 2.000cc cars, but a few Big Blocks and SBs. My mate still gives an appearance with his M8F which he bought in 1975.
The series, in spite of low numbers of competitors, even went through split ups which resulted in as little as one V8 competing in one or other race.
Best time to watch is beginning of August at the Nürburgring OGP (Oldtimer Grand Prix).
But check the website to make sure they actually do race.
I once knew all the names, but left Germany 10 years ago. Charls Agg from Trojan Cars once was heavily involved.
