ERA 649,
The first requirement is a strong commitment to doing Open track in the first place.
Lots of guys say they want to do it but for some reason always find an excuse not to.
Let me tell you first that I have been an instructor for three years and I have yet to find a beginner that was not hooked after just one day of open track.
This is a whole lot different than real racing. First off almost everyone is friendly and eager to help you weather it be driving instructions or helping with a car adjustment or fixing something that is not working.
The first time you go on the track you will be with others just like yourself. Some drive faster than others, some drive too slow but none are driving at race speeds, at least not for long.
The instructors are in charge and keep the pace reasonable.
Unless you are a totally out of control driver absolutly nothing will happen to your car. Lots of guys drive to the track and drive home again.
Back to your question. You will need a helmet SA rated at least with a 1995 sticker .
At least a Five point harness, attached to the frame, not the Fiberglass.
A radiator overflow catch can.
Two throttle return springs.
Working brake light,
Plenty of tire tread ( unless you run slicks)
Good brake pedal
NO leaking fluids, motor, trans, radiator.
No looseness in wheel bearings or suspension system.
If you have a single hoop roll bar you will only be able to do a lead follow for instruction(not very informative).
Lead folllow is only good for showing the line to more experienced drivers who may have never driven a particular track.
I would check with the organizers of the group you are planning on running with as these roll bar rules differ.
