Default Body Mounting

Did anyone have to trim the length of thier headers to set the body on the frame? My headers measure 54 3/4" outside and the body is less.

Thanks

yes I cut off a couple of inches to get the sidepipe up close to the body. I am using a 351.

It was a ***** to slide those spacers up the tubes. I used some emory cloth and anti-sieze. I tached them in with a mig once I got them where I liked.

I am going to set my engine in the frame this week. I was thinking of sending my headers out after the engine is bolted in. Should I wait in case I have to modify them? Are you going to weld the pipes to the headers? Any other tips and ideas from experience? Thanks

yes wait to get them coated. You have to cut the header down to allow the sidepipes to get a bit closer to the body. No you dont weld the pipes to the the headers. I welded a 1/4" rod across the headers and pipes and used a spring to hold them together. Works great. I dont have a picture handy but I could get one if you need.

Default Pre fit everything!

JB

Just my two cents!

Before you cut or trim your headers or side pipes pre fit your body on the frame and drill small locater holes to pin the body in place. The body is not symmetrical so measuring will only get you part of the way positioned. Thats why the manual says position the body where you are happy with it. In my case the right side pipe had to be trimmed quite a bit more than the left. I also chose to add bolt flanges to the headers and pipes, they are available from Finish Line. Take a look at my pictures, I photo documented almost every step. Not that anyones asked, but I have suggested that everyone pre fit everything you can before doing any finish work. After you have all of the details worked out then disasemble the car then coat and paint all of the pieces, it works for the pros. Just another word of advise, I have read from several A&C builders that they have had their pipes coated and then developed a rattle in one or both and had to cut through the coating to fix them. I developed one in my right muffler during the first summer on the road, but as you will see from my pictures I decided to go barbeque black on my pipes.

Anyway, good luck and Happy Holidays, Sam

Thanks Sam.

I made flanges also. I'm fortunate, I have access through my job to a computer burning machine, machine shop, cutting & welding. I think I'm staying with the black on the pipes also, not trying to win best in show, just love the car. I used sleeves with my flanges so I still have some adjustability.

Thanks Again.

My sidepipes are black VHT paint. Looks great. If you scratch them touch up is easy and blends in.
I did the headers for the heat control. After reading about fiberglass wraps verse cermacoat.
