Default ### New Springs

Hi folks

i am thinking of changing my coil springs. I am using the 'factory' setup that comes with the kit from A&C (not yet sure what the shock and coil rate is - does anyone know?)

My cobra only has about 2.5-3 inches of clearance. lowest point being the transmission bellhousing lip (quicktime). then the oil pan is the lowest point after. i will probably change the oil pan to a "normal" pan rather than the extra capacity moroso i have on there now.

i really dont want to cut the bottom lip of the bell housing, but maybe i will do that.

at any rate, i'd like to get overall 4-4.5 inches of clearance. so i want to swap the springs to some kind of a taller, progressive rate spring, so I can get a little bounce at the top, but then have the spring tighten right up so the car doesnt bounce 4 inches down to the ground.

has anyone swapped their springs and or shocks? any recommendations?

Most guys do cut their bell housing. But to raise your car, you generally don't just get taller springs you'll probably need new shocks with proper sized springs. Do you have shocks with spanners on them? And if you do, have you tightened them up? The only way longer springs will help you is if you just have springs that are too short to begin with. On another note, you want your car to be as low as possible to the ground to eliminate any high speed float..that's scary.

hmmmm...good point on the float.
looks like I'm cutting the bellhousing lip - that's cheaper anyway

Default Ride Height

As for my car I have alot of adjustablity in the height. I have my front spanner nut about as low as it will go. And the rear is also pretty low. I even removed the spacer that was located on top of the shock to get a little lower. My car is low and have even bumped the oil pan on a driveway. I'm just very careful. Check the position of your spanner front and rear? It could be a quick easy fix.

The suspension should be designed with a specific frame height and with a specific tire size. Changing heights can effect quit a bit. And, the shock at ride height should have 60% of travel for compression. If you do change heights I would at least have an alignment done and recheck toe. Just some things to think about.

i'm replacing the rear diff with a new one, adding an oil cooler, a few ignition improvements, and i am going to fabricate a "secret weapon" as well.
i have all the wheels off and will check the travel/heights/etc.

i am going to cut that bellhousing and put a 'stock type' 460 oil pan back on it. that should gain me 1 to 1.5 inches and that will be good.

i did get alot of practice last year looking 50-60 feet in front of the car at the road to avoid pot holes, ripples/etc :O
