Default adhesive for dash

Hey Guys,

I am curious to what adhesive people used to secure the dashpad to the dash board. I am building an Antique & Collectible
kit. I have never done any interior work before.
Thanks to all who rspond.

Jer

Jerry,

I've tried this before myself and had to have it sent to an upholstery shop.

I was told to try some 3M spray adhesive for metal/vinyl. It came right off. I tried several times but couldn't get it to stick. I did follow the directions.

What the upholstery shop used was a mystery....but I can tell you that it was sprayed on....and it was yellow and somewhat thick.

Sorry I can't provide you with anything else...but maybe it's a start.

It's hard to beat 3M 90 for a permanent bond. You can get it at Lowes.

Just spray a thick coat on both surfaces to be joined, wait 2 to 5 minutes or so before joining. A short piece if pipe works pretty good for rolling the surface smooth.

Use your wife's rolling pin, it's got handles

The 3M stuff is the nut. And, Rick is right, the rolling pin works great.

I did my radio box in the same stuff as the console.

If the 3M stuff is too thick, check with an interior shop and see what they use to thin it.

Oh, yeah, make sure the surface is as clean as possible. Use a metal prep for metal and surface prep for wood. This is a must.

Hope this helps.

Blykins, Trularin, Rick, Sydney,

Thanks for the response, currently I am fabricating some brackets to hand the dash. Hope to have it done by next week.

Thanks for the advice,
Regards to all,

Jer

Jer, get a good quality 'contact cement', the brush on type.
3M spray really sucks..........

3M works great. The fumes are nasty. Make sure you have plenty of ventilation.

Use 3M Headliner spray adhesive. It works very well when used according to directions. I have used it successfully for all the panels in my Cobra that required bonding grained vinyl upholstery material to aluminum panels. My car is now 4 years old and everything looks great. Use this material the same way you would use contact cement. Steal your wife's rolling pin to ensure no air bubbles between the vinyl and aluminum panel. Any air bubbles can be relieved by using a sharp 25 gauge needle to puncture the vinyl (an advantage to being a physician) and the rolling pin. Laquer thinner will remove any unwanted adhesive and should not attack the vinyl material.

I used 3M 90 to adhere the 1/8" closed cell foam to the back of my tanned and dyed Elk hide. I used hot glue to glue it to the dash. I had to clamp and stretch it around that lower dash piece but it came out pretty good.
