Default Moving to Arizona

Questions for you AZ guys...

I finally closed on a place in Bullhead City and will ultimately be relocating from CA in in the next year or two. I was trying to sell my car but haven't had much luck and now that I made the deal happen on the new house without selling my car I might just keep it.

When I make the move with the Cobra to AZ do I lose my CA SB-100? Being a 2006 special construction CA titled car will the process of registering in AZ be pretty painless or will I have to jump thru AZ DOT hoops? Will it stay smog exempt... I think the Mojave County area doesn't do smog test's (yet). Also does AZ DOT title replicas as kit cars by the year of the build (2006) or the model year of the car, 1965? I called the AZ DOT Bullhead City office and the girl I talked to seemed pretty clueless, but seemed to think I would pay fees based on what it cost me to finish the car, over 50K. She also said the car might have to be inspected but didn't know for sure. If it was titled as a 65 model year my fees would be around $22. My CA title says 0000 SPCNS. I still have the original MSO from Shelby that states the model year 1965.

Thanks guys for your help and advise.

Mike

Az is easy. I brought my car from Texas. It will be titled as the year it represents (1965/1966). It will need inspection, which consists mostly of making sure the VIN matches your current title. The inspection may cost something like $25, but I can't recall. Takes 15 minutes once you are called. There are no emissions for 1965/1966 cars ever. I did't pay any taxes when I brought mine into the state. You should not pay taxes, since you did that in CA when you titled it there. My license fee is something like $22/year. Welcome to AZ, this ain't Kalifornia.

Ventura, CA to Bullhead City, AZ???
Getting your car registered will not be a problem but trying to use it during the summer months is another story.

BTW, the person you talk to on the phone at MVD is a prison inmate unless you ask for a level 2 worker which takes about 60 minutes on hold.

Yes. Once registered in AZ, then the CA/SB100/SPCNS registration is lost. You would have to re-register via the SB100/SPCNS process again, if you wanted to register it again in CA.

That will be great to keep it and get to play with the AZ bunch! They are an active and good group if you hadn't figured that out from here already.

I would suggest looking for a third party office and avoid going to MVD office, which can easily take 1 to 2 hours in the Phoenix area. I just went through the process this past Monday with a car I just purchased in Oregon. The car is registered as a 65, no emissions requirement and they never verified the VIN. I was in and out in less then 10 minutes. Third party officess charge a convience fee which varies by location. In my case it was $22 and well worth it.

+1 what Sherm says. Did the same, likely never step foot inside MVD again.

Does anybody know of an third party office in the Bullhead area?

Just left the AZ MVD Bullhead office and I have an appt with the MVD inspector next Wed morning who seemed like a nice and very knowledgeable guy. Said on the phone the car would be titled as a 1965 model year and inspection would cost $25. Registration will be $22 and no smog. The only thing is the people in the office didn't like the fact the vin issued by CA CHP is the Shelby serial# CSX 4815. We'll see what the AZ MVD inspector says... he might issue a AZ VIN.

Sounds like what AAA is to CA DMV... I have said the AAA membership is worth the price to (almost) never have to set foot in a CA DMV office. My SB100 process was one of the worst nightmares with dealing with CA DMV EVER!!

Pretty sure DMV will issue a vin number for you. They did mine, decades ago.

i just tilted my Cobra and its a Backdraft racing replica and they titled it as 1965 so i was able to get a historic plate and pay the very low fees - so I'm sure you can do that also.

My wife and I are now officially in Las Vegas. It was 103*F on my truck thermometer when I went to the post office. Came home, did some stuff, went to dinner... Still 103. A little monsoon humidity. Pool is now at about 90. Very comfortable. Monsoon thunderstorms coming across the valley.
