After 2000 there are four digits that decode to week and year, before 2000 there are only three digits. Here is a good explanation:

Default Unsafe after 6 years

There was an earlier post on this forum with a link to a news commentary on the unsafe nature of tires over 6 years of age "from the date of manufacture", noting a high rate of spontaneous failure. There was a fairly stern warning that older new tires off the rack are dangerous and yet they're sold in stores all around the country. It's worth a look at your tires for the manufacturer's date and upgrading to newer ones if they're over six years of age no matter what their mileage, especially if there's "spirited" driving on your agenda.

Ride safely!

Interesting thread. I just went out to check the dates on my tires.

Here's a link regarding tire age from TireRack:

"Properly stored tires that are protected from the elements and not mounted on a wheel age very slowly before they are mounted and put into service.
Our experience has been that when properly stored and cared for, most street tires have a useful life in service of between six to ten years."

I know they are not really the favorite but I have a new pair of BFG off my CSX if anyone is interested in them. I would sell them cheap. $300 for the set of 4. Only 600 miles on them
