Mike is right.
It would be great to see other Arntz/? at the breakfast. I was surprised at the differences in Mikes and my car. The one type 4 car I’ve seen was epoxy and sounded like metal when you knocked on it. The other thing was the hood was not straight at the windshield. There was a large piece of hood extending to the windshield. Like a puzzle piece. I think that was for better access to the Chevy distributor.

The one I'm working on dosent have the 'puzzle' piece you speak of. this one is glass for sure. I'll have to check the hood.. the hood scoop is 'glass and is rivited on. Do you still meet at Athens in dublin? The car is probably 6 months to a year away from completion, but I'd lke to see other that are done and talk front suspension tuning...

Type 1
Hey Dan,
The car I am thinking on buying is probably a type 1 built in 1979. Do you know anything about its history? How many were built or any other details?

Inserting my 2 cents here....
1979's a bit late for the type 1 but any of the cars could have been built and registered at any time. Mine's been around since 83-84 or so and still hasn't ever been built by anyone
The rear wheel arches look a bit nicer than the early cars but I'm curious what type of door latches and handles the car has (can't quite see in the pictures). Does it have the 2" x 4" steel tube running through the doors that came in the later cars? The door hinges are early style.
There's really no clear line between the type 1 and type 2 cars, just a series of improvements over time. They probably weren't even called different "types" back then. The type 3 cars are generally anything close to what would become the Butler Racing cars, so the specs are known there. History of the car would be difficult without speaking to previous owners. No one really knows all that went on at Arntz or how many cars are out there, except Steve (maybe), so unless you can trace it back, you might be left wondering.
That being said, they're great solid cars - all of them. You would not be making a bad purchase with that car. It looks to be in good shape (and I've seen some ugly ones) so see what you can negotiate and buy it!

The car I'm working on has the 2x4 frame but no steel in the doors, just a block of wood 'glassed in the door and the bolts go thru that and then to the hinge inserted in the door... I guess this is an earlier one.

Just to clarify, the 2x4 I was referring to is in the door. The main frame rails under the car should be 3"x4". Both are .120 wall thickness.
The door hinges are 1/2" thick flat steel bolted to a steel plate that's welded to the 2x4 steel door beam running the width of the door and ending at the door latch (from a VW). This is the final version of the doors in all type 3 and 4 cars. There is no wood left and the tubular hinges are gone.

n6,
The hinges on the car I'm working on are similar and look to attach in the same place, but the inner door panel is diffrent and there is no VW door latch.
So it seems that what i'm woking on is a 1 or a 2 possibly.

It's just epoxy primer... although it is quite a close match. How'd you get such a high gloss?
There's a bit more work to do before the car is painted...

Jason,
I inspected the car again today, the hinges on the hood, doors and trunk are all the same tubular style. The doors are very light and thin, I was not able to see behind the carpet that was glued to the door. They are probably the same as KZJIM's, fiber glass and wood. The latching mechanism is at the opposite side of the hinges on the inside with no handles. It is a sliding mechanism, that slides forward to open the door and back to lock the door. The car does not have an emergency brake so it is one of the earlier years.

Doug,
Interesting, my door latches are an inside lever, no e-brake here either. Has any one done an ebrake on this car?
