Just to clarify, the 2x4 I was referring to is in the door. The main frame rails under the car should be 3"x4". Both are .120 wall thickness.
The door hinges are 1/2" thick flat steel bolted to a steel plate that's welded to the 2x4 steel door beam running the width of the door and ending at the door latch (from a VW). This is the final version of the doors in all type 3 and 4 cars. There is no wood left and the tubular hinges are gone.
