How can you have a day between clear and basecoat? Are you going to give it a light sand and another coat of colour before clear?

I'm following the manufacturers recommendations. They state on the spec sheet for the paint to leave it for 24 hrs at 20 degrees before the clear. I wasn't going to sand it (again on the recommendation of the paint manufacturer), but I have some issues with the clear i'll need to remove. So i'll go really light 2000 grit and see how it turns out.

Really? What type of paint is it? Usually the time it takes to clean the gun and mix the clear is all the base coat needs before spraying over.

What are you rubbing out in the clear? If its anything more than light orange peel you will be there forever with 2000. Don't be afraid to go lower than that. For big imperfections I go down as much as 800 some times even courser. Just have to gradually sand back up to 2000 and buff.

Motospray custom mixed metallic. The paint shop stated 24-48 hours drying time, thought I read 24 hours on the website, but it seems like that's for 2 pack.

Tried 1200 last night, but I have some micro blistering, so i'm going to go a bit more aggressive 800 on those areas and re do the colour, then blow the clear as per the website. The issue I've found is the metallic im using doesn't take to any sanding at all, the metallic is right up at the top of the colour coat. Soon as the paper touches it, it goes back to the base colour violet, almost black.

Bit of trial and error, but I'm learning!

That's how it is for all metallic base coats. They need to be off the gun before clear. If you sand it will see bad marks. You can usually knock off any nibs then retouch those areas before clear.

If you are doing it in your garage, you really just want to get plenty of clear on there and then wet sand the whole car up to the finest sandpaper you can find and then buff it with a cutting compound followed by a finer grade polish.

hi adam
make sure u get all the bits from the same car
and if u r going to go manual try find a complete manual car
I just finished an fg 6 cyl into an 88 patrol and it was a 6spd auto
but now it runs the patrol 5 spd manual
I spent 10 hours trying to reflash the ecu to become a manual because it would not rev past 2000 rpm because it was looking for the 6 spd auto and it wasn't there
well I finally figured it out and now revs to 6000

if u want to turn security off just find someone with tuning software and disable it
usually costs couple hundred bucks to turn it off then u just have to ire up the engine and ecu and it will start

if its an auto ecu and u need it manual then u need another piece of software and dongle
or take it to your ford dealer as they might do it if they feel like it

once u get it running u need a module for the tacho and fit some sensors to the engine for your gauges and your done

hey sevenohms u got yours running yet
does it bring up any error codes and does the dash bring up any warning lights
I know on the ve commodores if some of the factory modules are missing the dash brings up warnings and rings bells which is annoying

hi sideshow, i'm running the dash from the donor as the driver for the lights on the dash. it has lots of codes, but none that affect the engine, and with the tuning software I can turn off the ones that aren't required anymore.

yes it's easy to turn of the engine error codes
but I'm just curious if the dash still brings up errors
from the abs and stuff that's missing that is not related
to the engine ecu for future reference

Well ive run with and without abs with no issues. The autos won't like not having a speed signal. The issue I see without the dash in the car is that you need to convert the canbus data into the idiot lights.

Also there is issues with removing the heater as the canbus signals get out of sync a bit, but seems to be ok.

ok cool
yes the autos wont change gears without speed signal to ecu ,plus I can flash ecu to change where it gets its speed signal from
on the older ba bf ecus I know how to sort out the speed signal problem as ive done a ba ute drag car with all wiring stripped and no abs and I got the factory speedo working thru the engine ecu
I recently wired an fg 6 cyl into old patrol and I got all the patrol gauges and idiot lights working just like factory so all it needs a few modules
and also these days Dakota digital make other modules which u plug into your obd2 plug and u can extract speed and rpm from the ecu data,
and u can even buy custom old school round gauges on a daisy chain wiring loom which plug into your obd2 connector and it gets signals from it too and very easy to wire,
just did some on an old hg Monaro with an l98 and 6 speed tip tronic auto ,
the hard bit is when people ring me asking stuff about getting gauges to work and half the time they ring me just chasing info so they can do it themselves so im abit blunt on the phone and tell them send me the wiring job and ill tell u what u need to do to get everything sorted once I have all the bits to do their job hehehe,
we just bought a house so im going to be broke for next 30 years or ill have to charge double hehehe

Default Welding

Sevenohms,

I don't remember doing the welding

A trick for young players, if you have to do something once that can be seen

And you want it to look good, get it done by a pro.

I know, but it was done with my father, and sometimes it's journey, not the destination..
