If your friend wants to do anything more than look at the body (including registering the vehicle), then yes he has made a big mistake. Sorry, but it is what it is.
It's worth a discussion with Enkelman, but when they see the photos or see the car (!) in the flesh, I would be prepared for heart-ache.
