Default Aust Cobra Racing History

Can anyone help me with my records
In the Aust Tourist Trophy 1965 at Lakeside two cobras were entered. One by Shelby America CSX3002 driver Ken Miles the other by Ron Thorps Bargain Barn driver Ron Thorp. The 427 retired due to upper suspension problems(did its last lap on three tyres and one halibrand I can't remember or find where the 289 finished. The race was won by Ian Geoghegan in a Lotus23B
Thanks Jeff

Guys, definately COB 6033 ex Ron Thorpe. John Blandon had it in Adelaide 'till 5 or so years ago. Now at Bowden's in QLD.

Can't help with placing in the race though.

I've asked your question here, I'll be surprised if you don't get an accurate response.

There were some photos of the race on here.

Jeff, I'm not certain but Pete Geoghegan may have been in the 23, not the 23B. I saw the 23 only a few months ago.

Ian "Pete" Geoghegan !?!! I think it might have Leo. I would have thought that Pete might have been a tad too big for the Lotus..........well okay 2 tads !
If I remember correctly Leo spent much more time in a LoTus than his slightly larger Brother

Ffffaaaiirr eeeennough ! Either way he sure could steer a car !
That pic musta been before he discovered you could buy Paddle Pops by the box and you COULD eat 1/2 a doz meat pies in a sitting!
I think his best ever line to a journo was the classic Bathurst quote re the electrical problem when his Falcon stopped on Conrod Straight !!
Funniest line ever I reckon ! LOL

It's a shame that he got his life messed up later on though

Peter I'll agree to disagree about the 23b.An interesting memoir of the qualifing race was Geoghegan and Gardner abreast through Shell corner trying to hold off the cobra As the Maserati crossed the finish line the biggest blowup of an engine I've ever seen as the crank gave way and Gardner coasted to a holt in a trail of oil. Through good driving and possibly luck Miles steered the cobra through the lot and went on to come second by about seconds
Great memories Cheers Jeff

Warren - you just beat me to it, but I did state I wasn't certain.

The photo of the black 23 was probably Lowood in '63 when he also won. I had trouble seeing over the side of my pram in those days so I usually followed the races by listening to the exhaust note!

I think the 23B had a slightly wider chassis to accept the ford 1.5 &1.6.

Here are a couple of rough images of the Fair Deal Torana (Digby?). They come from the shoebox collection of Stephen Fryer who owns and runs the ex-Lionel Ayres MRC (a 23B replica built by Bob Britton of Rennmax fame)... Small world.
