Check your polarity. It should be DC electrode negative from memory. If the polarity is round the wrong way the heat will go to the electrode rather than the work piece. You might not have noticed when using it AC as it alternates Positive/Negative. The electrode positive cycle cleans the surface by blasting the oxide off before the negative cycle puts the heat into the weld.
