Default Oil filter for C6 LS2 low profile oil pan

Hi all. A quick question for those using the low profile LS sump in their Cobra.

Does anyone have the part number for a known brand filter that would suit, locally available please? Plenty of options available from the States at around $10 but freight is a killer.

Last oil change I spent about an hour sifting through 100s of oil filters at Autobarn trying to find the correct one. It's shorter than the VZ/VE Commodore filter and has a different thread. I ended up with an unknown brand which always makes me nervous.

Thanks

If it's the right one, the marking on mine is 'PF 48'. I can't say I remember any issues obtaining it. I think these pans are used on the Aussie 6.0ltr cars but I'm not certain.

Hi Peter, that checks out with one of the options I was looking at - thanks for confirming.

These pans aren't fitted to any Aussie cars as far as I know.

Hang on, the thread below suggests PF44/PF46 for 2005/2006 cars and PF48 for 2007. Apparently there was a change in the mounting thread pitch.

Anybody use a high petformance oil filter? - Page 2 - Corvette Forum

I can't access that forum - perhaps I need to be a member. Here is the part number of the pan I purchased:

C6 LS2 oil pan (has shallow rear sump) (kit with bolts/gasket) = 12581810

Paul from what I recall when researching sandwich plates, the thread is 13/16 UNF on the LSx. Wasn't sure if you had found this out or not. I was also looking for a smaller oil filter when I had the sandwich plate but couldn't find one suitable. Hope you find one suitable. Cheers Gregg

I think the LS3 filter is the low profile as standard (but not low profile sump). From memory that is what i got when i bought it from autobarn.

Here is a shot of the OE filter on my LS3, sticks down 80mm, doesn't appear to have a part number on it;

Thanks guys. The low profile isn't really the issue, it's the centre hole diameter and thread size. Thread is definitely not the same on the C6 LS2 sump as I tried fitting a VE Commodore filter and it didn't work. Not sure whether it was LS2 or LS3 though.

I'm dumping the oil on Saturday so worst case I'll visit the usual outlets with the old filter and report back findings.

A bit surprising that all you blokes with the low profile pans haven't changed your oil in recent times! Tsk tsk

Sambo the VE one you tried, was it from a HSV? If no, then it was an L76/98. LS2/3 might be different again.

Sambo,

Mine's a C6 Corvette sump, also a GM12581810 . Can't quite see the part number but perhaps enough to provide a clue...

OK spent a bit of time with Uncle Google today. GM p/n 12581810 appears to be for the oil pan kit including dipstick, pickup etc, while the pan itself is part no. 12624617.

Further searching on 12624617 turned up the oil pan below with AC Delco filter PF48 specified in the description.

PAN 12624617

Spoke to Repco and they cross referenced the PF48 with Ryco Z129. Not really keen on Ryco after my sister's SUV dropped its oil on the freeway due to exploding Ryco filter.

Will see if I can match PF48 with K&N or something reputable.

Interesting read below - even though it's just a frickin oil filer - shouldn't be this complicated!

Question what is correct cross reference for PF 48 oil filter , for 2007 C6 - Corvette Forum

Post #20 in that thread may explain the problem I discovered the other night - a slow oil leak from somewhere above the oil filter or around the seal.

Quick question, I have a new 5L bottle of Castrol edge 5W-40 to go in and it takes just over 6L from memory. I also have about 4L of castrol edge 10W-60. Would you add 1L of the heavier weight oil to 5L of the 5W-40 or is it bad news to mix the two?

Made it to the local Auto barn this evening and we managed to cross reference the AC Delco PF48 to Ryco Z663 which is then easily matched to all the other locally available brands. Ended up with the same Drift brand filter with internal magnet. Hopefully this saves someone a bit of stuffing around.

Thought I'd finish off with a photo of items consumed and a comparison of old (left) and new filters. Barely anything resembling metal particles that I could see, similarly on the sump plug magnet.

I find it interesting that you have had problems with ryco. I have used their filters for years in all my cars 308, 1.8 turbo, 3lt turbo and 3lt NA. Never had a problem. I don't think I have heard of the drifter brand.

Ryco had a quality downturn about 4 or 5 years ago.

Quality supplier at the moment is Cooper.

Or genuine Holden.

So I see. I did some research after posting that and there is a lot of bad feedback out there for them in recent times. The drift brand seems to have some good reviews as well as cooper. Good to know!

I like the 17mm nut fixed to the underside of the Drift filter. Much easier to tighten with a spanner or even a torque wrench.
