Interested in the BMX ers from the 1980's. I had a redline, then PK Ripper, then sprouted really quick (6ft plus) and got a moosegoose... I think every one of them went out on council pick up night over the next 10 years. Wish I kept them..might be worth a penny or two these days...

They are worth big bucks now. My sisters boyfriend is into vintage BMX bikes and some of the prices they are going for are huge. I think he ad a couple of works or team bikes in his collection.

Cheers

Vintage BMX stuff has big bucks prices for the right stuff, actually even the new collectors who are develping their knowledge pay good coin for average items....... however it is nothing compared to restoring/building cars. There is a few good sites if anyone is interested in checking the BMX stuff out.

vintagebmx.com

ozbmx.com.au

I know many guys into this. A close frind had nearly $40K 'invested' in his collection and another friend has a mega display and showroom collection of bikes, parts.... actually... its nearly a complete bike shop which I could only imagine what $$$ must be there.

I rode a prosite for years as I was sponsored by the importer.
At the 82 Australian titles I was given a GT. sounds like I should have kept them...

Just found this http://oldschoolmags.com/australian_mags.html
I used to write for BMX Torque back in the day, it seems to take forever to download.

Back on the bike this morning.

I'm still in the closet with the lycra. I wear some board shorts over the top.

Cheers

Don't be prudish Mike, just another piece of clothing your wife has to wash then.

Sitting atop the type of bike you've got - lycra would be expected. You've got to become a MAMIL at some stage!

Meeting my biking mate Saturday morning at the Basin I think, for what they call the 1 in 20 ride up to Sassafras.

Will be my first decent hill stint so I'll be trying hard not to stop and fall over - lol

But will be a good test of the achilles I guess and why I belatedly got onto the bike after all.

I'm told the ride home is very pleasurably though - it's all downhill

Cheers

Fellow bikers

As mentioned I'm pleased to say I did manage the 1 in 20 ride without falling over or stopping.

We actually left from the Goodlife gym carpark in Wantirna so it was a 20 minute ride to the Basin first as a warm up, probably a good thing.

It was only some 6 kms to Sassafras and then a further 2kms up to Olinda but I could certianly feel I'd been working later that day whilst working on the cobra at Marty's shed and then into Sunday - a nice weary feeling.

Riding with my mate we discovered my cassette and drive set up is less hill oriented and I was cranking at a slower cadence than probably desirable.

Bike will be in for a service some time soon anyway so it may be time to replace these bits for something a bit more servicable in this use.

And the advice was correct, that ride back down the hill was pretty exhilarating though the narrow winding road combined with the other bike and car traffic was at times a bit of a worry with cars trying to overtake up and down hill. Even had a left hand drive Territory following us for a fair period before he could overtake with his lack of vision.

Though only doing about 45 - 55 kph coming down, you had to have your wits about you both for the traffic and to not hit some of the tight corners too fast. Certainly improved my appreciation of all these downhill stages I've been watching the professionals ride recently, and our road was dry too!!

My mate leading down said he came belting into one corner to find himself facing a car fully across double lines in his lane overtaking bikes heading up hill.

Somehow they missed each other thankfully but there are some impatient arsehole drivers out there that's for sure.

Just reading about NZ bringing in legislation requiring a 1.5m passing separation, that would be a blessing. I nearly got hit by one of our my own company's front lift trucks the other week, not always good out there.

Anyway stay upright and safe chasps - whatever you are steering!

Good effort Slowy.

My fitness seems to be improving. I rode to work 3 times last week for a total of 87KM.

I've moved my parking spot a bit further away from the city and I've got about a 16Km ride each way now. Rode in to work this morning and the wind was a bit of a bugger in places but it was still good fun.

Keep peddaling!

Cheers

Anyway keep on increasing the seperation it is all for your good in the end!

Nice work lads!
Slowy, great effort on the 1:20 its a pleseant but tiring ride.
Now just for some perspective, It's rumoured that Cadel sis the 1:20 in 10mins.
I'm guessing you may have taken closer to 20-25mins

Mike Before you know it, you'll ditch the shorts you're wearing over your lycra... It helps with any head winds

I'm piecing together my new ride now
I'm going for a bit of a "pimp my bike" sort of theme.
i'm totally jealous as I haven't done anywhere near as much as you gents lately and certainly nowhere near as I'd like.
When she's done I'll post you all a pic.

PS: Slow PM sent.

I ditched the shorts and went full MAMIL last week. I figure at 44 I have no dignity left so I don't care what I look like.

Definitely more comfortable in bike shorts.

Cheers

Jees Mike wait till you roll through another ten years then!

But then that means I'm not sure what it is that I now no longer have to care about.

However I absolutely refuse to take a razor anywhere near my legs.

I am happy to look like a porcupine with hairs sticking through the lycra on occassion.

And good guess Ant

Did it in 26' 56" first time out though the hill goat in our group I was told is easily good for a sub 19 minute dash.

Something to aim at I guess.

Ciao

Just thought I'd provide a bit of an update. (Cobra update coming later).

I've been riding for 3 months now. I'm doing on average about 70-80Km a week which probably doesn't seem like much to you regular cyclists but it's a lot more than I'd ever done even riding as a teenager.

I've dropped about 5KG and I'm wearing jeans I haven't fit into for ages so I'm feeling pretty happy with myself. I track my times and speeds riding to work with a phone app and I'm still seeing steady improvement. This sure helps with the motivation.

Unfortunately the bicycles are proving to be a bit addictive and I picked up a mountain bike today. It'll be better for the dirt trails near home when I'm riding with my daughter.

Modena likes this.

Hey Mike, Awesome work and another bike purchase shows your interest. You may be interested in the cycle computers as well. Gives you average speed, time travels, trip, current speed, cadence. etc etc... however the two readings that I used it for was average speed and odometer. Was surprised that after the first year I had done over 10,000 k's... this was all on a mountain bike (had two sets of wheels, slicks for the road and a set for the bush)..... I never could get into the racing bike thing.

I dont ride anywhere near that anymore and my mountain bikes are long gone however I now ride a 24" bmx cruiser with a bunch of mates who I used to race bmx with back in the day.... now our rides usually include a pub stop as well for a beer or two.

1. 80km a week in winter is a great effort in my books.
2. Congrats on the jean wearing thing...
3. You're addicted, and thats ok, you don't need to use your daughter as an excuse.

4. The rule for the number of bikes you should own is the same as for cars: (n+1) where plus "n" is the number of bikes (or cars) you currently have.

Ps: I'm booked in for 2013 around the bay (210km), I really need to clock up a few kms in my legs, so if anyone is keen for ride shoot me a PM.

Sleepless nights for me too over the next 3 weeks.
I'm thinking I could put in my cv to driving the orica greenedge bus.
Can't do too much worse than the last bloke.

Now post a damned pic of your ride for crying out load.
Last time I saw Baum I wet my pants!!!
Bike porn for sure

Mmmm there is a four week period in July when employers find their bike enthusiast staff are just not with it.........ZZzzzzzz...

Yes the bus was a surprise - you would think the organisers would have a banner and finish line hoarding at the right level. Not the bus driver I think. Remember the cars with the Moomba floats in the parade years ago...

Check out the bike bus in my gallery etc....
