Newby, 1st Post, Can you show me your wheels

Hi all

I've been lurking around for a while, finally decided to join up,

Have purchased myself a 2nd hand Cobra and looking to do some modifying and tidying up.

My first port of call is wheels & tyres, I'm not sure what the wheels are that are on it but I don't really like them, I quiet like the American Racing cobra's but I'd really like to see them on some cars or other similar styles from other brands,

If anyone has any pictures they could post up of their rims and what, size, brand they are, where you purchased them from etc, it would be much appreciated.

I used American racing torque thrust II. I got mine from wheel boyz in Qld. 17x12 rear and 17x7.5 front. Front were off the shelf but rear were custom offset. From memory it was around $1200 including postage to Sydney.

Wheel boyz were great to deal with. This was in 2009.

Yes I saw that event on the Vic website, will be definatly be coming along at least 1 of the days for a look and to pick up some ideas.

Hi mate,

Well I'm not quiet sure who's kit it was/is, the guy purchased it off didn't know, all he could tell me was it came from the original builder who lived down Mornington (VIC) way, if anyone knows the car or the original builder, I'd luv to get in contact with him to ask a couple of questions.

It has 15's on it, (I don't know what the wheels are, someone on here may know them?) I'm undecided about 15,17 or 18's, with my plans I'm really going to need bigger brakes than what the 15's can fit, but as I said I'm really not sure.

My story is I spent the last 3 years building the ute below, over the last 6 months I'd lost the enthusiasm to finish it (engine & wiring) or even go drag racing again.

So I sold it to one of our customers and went Cobra hunting, I wanted something already registered in Vic (couldn't be bothered with the whole build thing again) the rest I wasn't fussed about as I want to modify most of it.

And come down to a Vic Cobra Club meet. There are often a few cars to look at there! Decent turn out at this months meeting, at least a dozen cars!

Looks like it's in really good condition!
I'm sure others with more knowledge of Australian Cobra brands will be able to identify the unique combination of external boot hinges, left side filler cap and Jag suspension



I think your wheels are Dragway billets.

The ute looked like a monster. Looks like you had planned to go with a Procharger. I had a F3R-139 that came off a street engine that made 1536hp. They sure can blow some air!

The shop looks impressive. What's your business name?

Craig's right - wheels are old Dragway Cobra, a pretty loose copy of the original FIA wheels, they do a far better version now.

Body is not G-Force or Dax, looks like a Wooley or the rear in Craigs pic looks a bit DRB. A side profile shot and a close up of the head light/front guard area could confirm.

The colour would lend itself to either classic or modern style wheels and if you've been lurking a while you will know there is almost no choice for a good tyre in a 15".

I will go out on a limb and say it looks very much like a 'Python' Cobra from Melbourne.
They are a nice car, I had one short listed when I was buying mine.

The more I look at it, I'd put money on a DRB Gav.

Wide taper headlight bezel's, side pipe exiting guard further forward, and the tall narrow shape of rear guard.

You might be right, I don't think Python have their fuel filler in the passenger guard.

I'd be guessing that it's a DRB...

only difference I see to the "normal" DRB is the external hinges on the boot....

not a common thing on the DRB from what I've seen....but that mightn't mean much I suppose.

Having spent time around a DRB (because I did bodywork on/painted one), the car does look like a DRB to me too.

I am perplexed however as to why the driver's side roll bar has a supporting brace but the passenger side does not? Also, IMHO, a classic Cobra wood-rimmed wheel would look very much at home on this car, as would a pair of windwings.

Lastly, how did it pass a RWC without sunvisors?

Hi guys, thanks for all the replies, very helpful

I spoke the guys from DRB, they said if it was one of theirs it should have a chassis number on the drivers side on the 25mm x 25mm bar that runs from the firewall to the front of the car, I've searched everywhere and no stamping, also that bar is 50mm x 50mm so I'm no closer to working it out.

I'll take some better photos tomorrow and post them up and see if we can get to the bottom of it, again thanks for your help.

I'm really leaning towards 17's or 18's in the halibrand style, mainly for handling and big brakes.

750hp: yeah thé Ute was set up for a crank driven F3, the workshop is GM Motorsport where I work, we've tuned a few LS cobras in the last couple of years, another reason I wanted one.

Chook: I was pleased with the purchase for what it is, it drives fine etc, but my plan was to find something I could modify,

My plan is to replace the 302 with a 427 LS & 6 speed or an auto over winter, along with some other mods, The body is showing its 16 years so after a power plant & suspension tidy up ill probably get the body tidied up and re painted another colour.
