I saw those deano - i can't beleive the price considering a second-hand pwr steering pump is probably $100! I was thinking I would just drain mine and make it into an air compressor :-)
But then, as Sam points out, I don't have one! FTW! VF is electric pwr steering. So I reckon the VF idler in that space should fit the L98 nicely. Also, my Commodonor was actually driveable (just) before my wrecker removed its guts too, so I am very confident about what I've bought. |

I am pretty sure that you can't run the compressor on air. It needs the power steering fluid to cool the bearing and shaft. Cheers Sam |
I also have the power steering pump and thought about just looping the lines so it had fluid in so it wouldn't sieze but I thought its just one more thing to go wrong so I sold it for 120 bucks and bought the idler set up not that you can see it with the engine covers I bought to over the top . .
I wonder how much holdens charge for th vf idlers just make sure the bolt pattern is the same so they bolt up ive been told there are a couple of different patterns the guys at castlemain rod shop told me that . cheers dean |
I hate to say it but Im thinking LS for my Pace 427....

Not sure maybe 2 I think.

You guys keep saying LS2? The LS2 hasn't been used in AU since about 2007/2008. If you mean 6.0L Commodore/HSV engines since then you are referring to L98, L76 and L77.

I only said 'LS2' originally (and clarified it is an L77) to save confusing our US brethren, Ben. Block's the same anyway....
|
I also mentioned LS1 and that's been out of production for a decade. Engines (in various conditions) are still available though. I could have listed the entire range but it seemed simpler to say 1,2,3 that's all..

Build update
Wow, been January since I last posted a build update. Sorry!
(I my defence, I have actually tried at least twice but the forums site seems to be getting much more unstable lately. Damn! Just after I paid up too!) Ok, so stripped all the loom and accessories off the engine and gearbox so it was much less scary to me! Cleaned it all down, and it comes up like new. Even polished a few bits like the spark plug covers. http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3f2fc1fb.jpg Cleaned up and filed off the unsightly casting burrs from the diff, and gave it a coat of engine aluminium paint - looks like a brand newie! http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7c975f29.jpg Installed. That was a bugg@r of a job! http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...psrcmfdik8.jpg Purchased a low profile sump from the U.S. I expected to have to grind an inch off the bottom of the bellhousing, install a clutch bleed extension (to extend the nipple outside the housing) and maybe modify the gearing centering to give a better positive centre and easy shift from second to third, so I took the 'box and sump to Aussie Mike. Guess what, this newer version has all those mods already done! GM is stealing Mike's tricks! http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...ps17f0be99.jpg I also got a Core Hurst Shifter adapter from the U.S. for the forward fitment on the Tremec. Nice unit. And some blingy fluid reservoirs too. http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...psz5lwyuve.jpg |
And yet more updates
I finished the front suspension in January actually. Including the charcoal canister (that fits between the suspension arms on the left, and the horns that fit on the right).
http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...pstvo1pvfp.jpg Then all the brake, clutch, fuel and charcoal vapour hard lines were fitted. http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...pst7bbfih4.jpg Handbrake. Passenger side. I modified this from standard just to lower it a little so the cable pulled straighter. Would really matter,I'm told, but I preferred that to a broken wire and a jammed handbrake later on! http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...pshxijp9ey.jpg Then the rear suspension and axles. All a bit tricky. I'm learning new sh!t daily! http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...ps25cc7743.jpg http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...pseab6e7cd.jpg |
Looking fantastic!
I might be imagining things, but do some Pace cars have adjustment holes to raise/lower the upper and lower control arms? I notice that yours doesn't and wonder if it's an option when ordering the kit? |
More updates
Installed the pedals and box properly, attached the fly-by-wire setup.
http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...ps042a9708.jpg Finished off the brake and clutch master cylinder and reservoirs. Had to turn by hand to a bit of fabrication here, as this was a non-standard bit. http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...psuuip3zxk.jpg And then installed all the flexible fuel lines, regulator, gauge (not required as I'll have one in the dash, but I have a hole in the regulator for a gauge, and.... It looks cool!). Coarse filter, pump, fine filter, regulator. http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...psv4orkdfn.jpg This is looking back down the tunnel towards the diff. That's the billet tailshaft adapter at the end. http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...pswlquvtcv.jpg Underneath. http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...psaifktqyn.jpg Then with skid plate. http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...psilfp16cy.jpg And the fuel tank. Finally makes the chassis look proper now (it looked a bit too stubby and short without the tank!). http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...pszkkemdpe.jpg |

just wow .its looking great guye your doing a fine job of it all i have to admit i am just a little green with envy.
cheers dean |
Thanks for the info Guy.
Looking forward to seeing how a tailshaft loop mounts in there. With the filter and pump in place, it all starts to look a bit tight in the tunnel! The tighter everything is packaged in, the more interior space is available for the driver and passenger. |

Consider what happens if a tailshaft joint fails. Could the fluid lines and the pump/filter be run another way, away from the tunnel? Everything else looks good. |
The more that you look the more you see.
The brake lines are nice and neat, acually, all of it is neat. Great update and I look forward to more in the future. Heaps of photos never gets old either. |
love the build
; but could some one tell me why you have to use a bellcrank to run the fly by wire pedal when holden spent dollars to get it to work straight of the pedal ???? or is there no room to run it as per original ??? just wondering rob |

Great update Guy! Re the fuel tank, what are you going to do to catch the aluminium filings when you drill and tap for the fuel sender? |
