Great Job Guy
If you're anything like me that will be a major motivational boost Looks like you'll be ready for 'indoor' works in time for winter Keep the posts coming LoBelly |
Its great seeing these updates and your progress. Keep it up even for the small milestones.
I know that I say it all the time but pics never get old and they tell a thousand words. It seems like you really have the Aussie spirit of mates helping mates in the garage, however, I didn't see a single stray beer bottle or a pizza box anywhere. |
Because I got such a late model Commodonor (VF) it has all the great new features, such as a friggin' clutch pulley on the alternator.
Now normally I'd be wrapt about this, however it doesn't fit! As you can see in the pic below, I had to raise the engine to fit the alternator, but if I lower it that extra protrusion will not clear the chassis member. It turns out that every alternator before the VF had a standard pulley without that extra sticky out bit. And also new Pace chassis have a slightly different structure here (part of the continually improving product lifecycle) that would allow this alternator setup to fit. Luck of the draw! Anyway, does anyone have a good condition alternator they be keen to swap, or even better a completely stuffed one that I could rescue the pulley from? http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...psvgut4glu.jpg |
grab a ve alt im sure it doesn't have that snout on it
|
i just ducked out to the shed and doubled checked mine is a 2007 ve 6 litre and has a plain alt on it so it will bolt up to your engine like ya old one . should fix ya prob infact you prob can sell yours for more than what a ve one would cost ,
cheers dean |
Yeah thanks Dean, that's what I thought.
So thats why I was putting it out there in case anyone wanted to upgrade! Or perhaps had a cheap pulley, cause they're actually hard to find without the alternator attached. I just need to find a broken alternator ideally and snaffoo the pulley! |
get onto the buy and sell facebook pages for the ls engines someone will have something for sure
try this one https://www.facebook.com/groups/194626797362310/ |
Go to your local auto elec surely they would have a dead one laying around
|
Didn't know about that fb page, Dean, thanks!
Going to see my local elec tomorrow David. Funnily, when I said I was building a kit car he said "happy to help with the alternator, but I don't have the man power for kit car looms" before I even asked for that help! Must have had a bad experience :-( |
i got sideshow to rework my engine loom and extend it and flip it over so now my ecu and bcm will hide behind the dash and not in the engine bay .

Have a think about an oversized pulley available from the states. Slows down the revs on the alternator a bit, all the Improved Production guys run them as the commodores have a bit of a habit of frying the alternator if you enjoy 'spirited' driving....
Also if you are going to do that I would get a 25% underdriven crank pulley to slow the water pump down.... Stock pumps cavitate at higher rpms. While you think this might not apply to you then think if you are ever going to do any track work at all. Easier to do it now, and relatively low cost. Just a thought...... |
I have the correct puller tool for the LS motors if you need to remove your harmonic balancer.
I'm running a trickflow under-drive balancer. It's SFI approved and was a reasonable price through Summit. Nicely made bit of gear too. If you have access to a lathe the serpentine pulley for the alternator is fairly straight forward to make yourself. Cheers |
Ash u must come and help me resolve my pulley issues.... I need some heeeeelp. Sorry for hijack and love the build thread. Keep the pics and mod issues coming.
Are you pace guys running/keeping the AC? |
no aircon for me but i have the air con compressor if its any good to anyone of a l 98 donk
|
No aircon for me (don't believe I'll have the room with the LSA), but I am running a heater!
|
Thanks guys, I'll look into those options towie and spook. I would like to tidy up all those pulleys and wheels to some bling look too.
Mike, could I turn an aluminium pulley? At your place? :-) I'm ditching the aircon. And the heater. I'm a tough Cobra driver now :) Lol (with heated seats). |

Ditto Dean re: multitasking those demisters heaters.
But now you guys have got me doing MORE research. What about this? 25% underdrive AND shiny :-) PRW 2534619, PRW PQX SFI-Rated Racing FluidGel Dampers | PRW http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...psnuihif0y.jpg |

Edlebrock (part number 8895) make one for the LS as do Stewart. Use the alt as the tensioner. There is your pulley tidy up solved as well as some bling to compliment that rocker suspension set up. However, you may need to check with your intake set up. I was looking at this with my previous one, but it had 8TB manifold. https://www.stewartcomponents.com/in...product_id=161 |
