i went wetsuit material glued on with sikaflex under the main area of the guard that stones will go. I then coated the entire underside with primer, then coated with a spray on body deadener that used a gun that screws onto the bottle (shultz gun?). Then painted over with gloss Por 15 black. There are a few different body deadeners/stone guards, not all are paintable though. The one i used was water based.
The finish is super hard from the pro 15 and the body deadener and foam provide some insulation. Looks really nice and fairly inexpensive. I think the gun was only about $20 from memory.
