Default DRB exhaust manifold problem

Hi all,
Ive recently joined and taken on a cobra DRB build of my fathers. He is using a 290 Boss motor, and I have had it in and out a few times. I am now looking to bolt on the DRB supplied exhaust manifolds, but have hit a brick wall. The passenger side does not fit at all (seems to run through the engine mount) and the drivers side goes on easy but then impossible to bolt on starter motor. When you bolt on the Starter then try to put the manifold back on, it then fowls

any help / advice out there?

Cheers
Kieren

yea, they just said it should fit, but a few friends have taken a look and scratched their heads...one SA guy suggested i start from scratch and get a new set made...just curious if any other DRB builds encountered the same issue

Kieren

Certainly sounds like something has not been fabricated to suit the application.

I acquired a second hand extractor set off a Windsor out of an RMC early in my build. The G-Force and RMC are copies in the engine bay area at least.

So I expected these to fit straight up but struck similar problems.

I had my exhaust provider slightly remodel my extractors and it all worked for me.

Perhaps you might need a similar sort of adjustment. Getting these to fit is probably one of the harder issues you will need to sort in the engine bay.

Harder for you too running a Boss 290 motor, the Windsor is so some 13" narrower I believe.

Good luck mate.

I dont know what DRB engine bays look like, but if they're for sidepipes could you have them around the wrong way?

Thanks guys!

Pretty sure, actually positive they are not the wrong way around - impossible to put on opposite sides. I have just been playing and realized if I lift the starter motor up at the same time as the manifold, I can get them both in position as long as I bolt them both in at the same time - awkward but doable. On the passenger side however not so easy. I am now trying to remove the dip stick that is in the way, but that in itself is hard to get out while the engine is in. Going to need two pairs of hands if i have any chance.

Thanks for the advise on a re-fit slo...at this stage it might just be a better option and can put my time to other areas instead

K.

I had problems with my DRB with a windsor not fitting. The engine with the pipes on it was to wide for the engine bay.
The pipes were made by Castle Auto and exhaust in Castlemaine for this engine to fit into the DRB chassis.
Both DRB and Castle Auto said they should fit and stiff **** basically.

I had to cut the side panels out of the tunnel and weld them back on the inside of the chassis.

Coud you fit the engine with pipes, bellhousing and starter together on the bench and install them all together?

Good luck and hope you dont as many head aches with your DRB as me.

Hi Ross, thanks for the comment and info!
I think it's a similar story here where they say 'it should fit' but actually does not at all. My father had HUGE problems building his GT40 with parts from DBR that virtually always needed altering to fit.
No chance to get the motor is with manifolds bolted on. Just impossible. As mentioned we have had to cut away the recess lip for the bonnet on each side just to get motor in without manifolds. Even then the donk needs to be lowered in on a crazy rotated angle to get each side in separately.
Very tempted to look at getting new manifolds made up. I love the build process, but there is a limit to how much time I want to invest in making wrong items fit.

Here's hoping also I have less headaches than you mate

Any other potential nasty areas I should be looking out for?

Cheers
K

Kizza501,

Good to see you found your way onto the Forum and getting some support - hope you get the exhaust sorted.

Trawl through the various owners on site here on the Australian Forum and you see other DRB owners. You can contact via PM - private message - and exchange mobile number in a PM.

As I mentioned in my email to you, contact the South Australian Cobra Car club and talk with Bruce or Dean. Both have mobile contact and email details on site.

You will soon be connected to DRB owners.

As I mentioned I am back in Australia mid May and will follow up on the other points raised and questions for the South Australian owners.

Bernie

I have the 290 in my DRB and whilst the factory supplied extractors were to say the least expensive I found they were a masterpiece..fitted well. im assuming you also bought the engine mounts??. A hoist is very handy for this job if you have access to one and a hole or two in the firewall to reach the rear bolts was the easy way out.. happy to try to take some pics and send em to ya mobile if you PM me..or any other little issues you may have..my kit is complete and fully registered and yes im very very happy with it..

Hi boss,
Tomorrow I will check about the manifold and make sure 100% they are DRB extractors. I'm going to spend the day on it so will get to the bottom of it one way or the other. Understand what you mean by holes in the firewall. I can see worth in a few through the driver side tunnel at least in order to do up the bolts. I'm also sure the engine mounts are DRB but will check this also tomorrow.

Photos would be great if not too much trouble.

Appreciate your offer to assist mate. Great to meet another DBR that's complete with same set up and will be fantastic if I can ask you questions from time to time.

Cheers

its actually the passenger side manifold
can confirm they are DRB bought
just dont see how they will fit.
in the process of taking out the dip stick to help, but the engine mounts (also DRB) seem
to get in the way of the manifold...any photos will be great
