Default Please help!! - drb boss boys

Hi all,

My DRB cobra build is going really well EXCEPT for my wheels/tyres
I have spent at least 10 hours trying to work out the right offsets and tyre size for this car, but I am just not confident to go spend 5k and end up with useless tyres.

Ive spoken to DRB - no real help with 15" rims
Ive spoken to numerous tyre 'experts' - no help at all
Ive made my own wooden wheels!! - some help but still not conclusive
Ive even bought tyres close to what I need and stuffed them onto stock rims, but still the overall tyre height, width and rim offset is not clear.

I am hoping (preying) that there are some DRB 'boss' cobra guys out there who can tell me what tyres they fitted so I have real world comparison.

Question; Why do you want to go 15" rims ?
You are really going to limit your choice of tyres
There is precious little out there that you would say is quality product.

Hi Rog,

I have seen that calculator, unfortunately its the physical sizing up, offset of the rim, OD of the tyre and width that will fit well into the guard that concerns me. And it seems nobody can really help with it

Reason for 15" is I personally love the look of the old school 'fat' tyres. I think they look great on the cobra so want to persist with it.

I have already researched tyres quite a lot, and although the options are not huge, there are a number of brands I can get here or brought in.

Just amazed there are no DRB boss cobra guys on this forum that can offer what tyre size they are running

I think the idea of the calculator would be that if you could get info on any tyre size 16 or 17 then convert it back to 15". I know its not ideal but could get you close. Just got to find someone with a Boss.

I think the Boss runs Jag gear doesn't it?

Hi David,

Yes I understand the theory in that. I have some idea but very worried about spending the money, waiting a month or two for tyres/rims that end up wrong.

Thats correct, it runs jag both front and rear, so the 15" will fit without rotor issues.

Seems the boss DRB is a rare machine! Contacted DRB and even they were a little not sure who I could contact.

Hey Kizza, I found this from a thread posted back in 2007 from a QLD member who didn't appear to be around for long. No rim offset detail however rim and tyre size are listed:

This is my first build. It is a DRB Cobra. It is fitted with a Ford Boss 5.4 Quad Cam motor & Ford Falcon BA XR8 Tip Tonic gear box. All Ford Falcon wiring, computers & components are being run in the car.
The car runs ABS, cruise control, traction control ect.
The suspension is Jaguar Front & Rear.
The wheels are ROH Monaco 3 piece. Front: 8 1/2" X 17"
Rear: 12" X 17"
Tyres Pirelli P Zero Front: 245/45/17
Rear: 335/35/17
The interior is done with Top grade leather & Mercedes carpet.
Paint is Ford Blood Orange with a pearl



The 335-17 is 15mm taller than the 255-15 you were considering, so a good chance it will fit.

Are you still favouring the 255/60-15?

I know of a set of 255/60-15 and 225/60-15 Bridgestone's on rim's that came off an RMC that may be looking for a new home. I'll look into it.

Hey there Rubber Grub (you should change your handle Rog)

How much do tyres deteriorate over time? Would a set of low K, 12 year old Potenza RE-710’s still be a better option than B F Goodslips?

Out of desperation one year I tried a set of 12 year old tyres, yikes... first off I couldn't get enough traction to get off the lift thingo at the tyre shop. When I finally got moving I stopped because I thought there was a jack or something stuck under the car, it sounded and felt like I was driving over loose pavers. Then I reckon I could have spun the wheels all the way home, they were a little softer when they heated up but not much. There was some verrrry sloooow times that year at the NSW Championships. DON'T DO IT! Unless of course you want to win the local burn out comp or do a bit of drifting.

Well, they go effen hard
BFG T/A's are made to look good, which if I'm being honest, is what they do well.
Unless you've experienced them in the wet, not much can compare to them.
Have no info on Cooper Cobras which I think are available in the sizes you're looking for-so can't comment.
You can get some big Pirelli's I think bigger than what you want.
Try Antique tyres in Melbourne, they can probably help you.

I had a v8 torana yrs ago and fitted bfg t/a's the car lost traction everytime a dark cloud passed overhead . worse tyre ive ever had for in the wet . even bob jane out of rounders had more grip :-).

Looks like new tyres are the only way to fly
The size comparison is very interesting indeed!
I was looking at 255 wide in the rear and this guy got 335 in there, so I am going to take a good hard look at maybe getting a few more inches in.

Offset wise will just re-check my measurements and roll the dice. How hard can it be :P

I know the rear chassis in that car was modified to take the 355 tires and rims I was talking to the owner about it at one stage when he was selling it .

I think that was Graham Akers car, highly modified during the chassis build to fit those bit wheels and tyres under it.

Mine is the Torana version so a bit different. It also has the wider flared front guards to accept bigger tyres.
On my race rims I run an 18x9.5 front with a 27/65/18 slick and on the rear an 18x11 rim with a 30/65/18 slick. Pretty big tyres really.... Gotta run about 3 degrees camber on the front to help keep them under the guards.....
On the street I run a 17x8 with 235 and 17x9.5 with a 275.

That would explain the mystery. Measured up again tonight and 355 is well outside the guards!

I think 255 is about my limit.
